\n When adults and students at North Hall High School needed guidance, reassurance, help handling tragedies in their lives, many made their first stop in the classroom of Jason Hughes.\n <\/p>\n

\n Now, they\u2019re trying to figure out where to turn as the Georgia school deals with the loss<\/a> of Hughes himself in what by all accounts was an accident involving some of his beloved students.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cFifty-year-old coaches that have been doing this for a while have tears in their eyes, saying, \u2018He\u2019s the one I would go to. What am I going to do now?\u2019\u201d Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield told CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n The emotions many students would be expressing<\/a> to Hughes in person now cover the door to the math teacher\u2019s classroom, plus its frame and the wall around the plaque marking room 1328.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou were my favorite teacher and I will always miss you,\u201d a student named Emily wrote on one of dozens of Post-It Notes \u2013 pink, green, white, yellow, blue \u2013 gracing the space.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cLove everyone as Hughes would,\u201d wrote another. \u201cHe\u2019ll be forever missed.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Bible\u2019s Matthew 25:23 \u2013 \u201cWell done, good and faithful servant\u201d \u2013 is invoked on several notes, seen in photos published<\/a> by the school\u2019s yearbook staff.\n <\/p>\n

\n Many students refer to the teacher and coach as their \u201cSchool Dad.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Hughes, 40, died March 6 after falling into the path of a student\u2019s vehicle outside his home in Gainesville, some 60 miles northeast of Atlanta. It happened amid a long-standing, lighthearted prank in which juniors and seniors unfurl toilet paper onto the homes of teachers, who try to catch them in the act.\n <\/p>\n

\"Students<\/p>\n

\n After \u201crolling\u201d Hughes\u2019 home, five students got into two pickup trucks, the Hall County Sheriff\u2019s Office said. As the teens drove away, the teacher slipped on wet pavement, and one of the pickups ran him over him.\n <\/p>\n

\n The students, all 18, stopped to help as medics responded, the sheriff\u2019s office said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Hughes died, leaving behind his wife, Laura, also a math teacher at North Hall, and two young sons. The students \u2013 three young men and two young women \u2013 were arrested, and their fate was widely discussed by a grieving community preparing for the cherished teacher\u2019s<\/a> Saturday funeral.\n <\/p>\n

\n Within two days of the arrests, Laura Hughes said her late husband wouldn\u2019t want the students to face criminal charges. And neither did she.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,\u201d said Hughes in a written statement released by the family. \u201cThis would be counter to Jason\u2019s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The unifying example set by Jason Hughes in life and Laura Hughes after his death are keeping the community together now, the superintendent said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou always worry when there\u2019s a tragedy whether it will split the community, whether you\u2019ll have people that have some really deep hurt feelings,\u201d Schofield said. \u201cWhen his wife came out that quickly with her statement, as a grown man, that brought me to tears.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\"Hughes<\/p>\n

\n The toilet paper prank is a North Hall tradition, part of the \u201cJunior Senior Wars\u201d leading up to prom. Students roll teachers\u2019 homes and document the acts on Instagram to earn points in an unofficial contest.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Hughes home had been a prized target in recent years, social media posts suggest, worth extra points since two teachers lived there.\n <\/p>\n

\n If a teacher could catch the kids in the act and take their picture, the students lost points. A blurry photo posted last year on Instagram shows two of the students arrested in connection with Hughes\u2019 death smiling broadly.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cJuniors caught,\u201d the post says, indicating they\u2019d lost four points.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jason Hughes had been looking forward to the students coming again this year, his wife told the New York Times<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n He \u201cwas excited,\u201d she said, \u201cand waiting to catch them in the act.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n While there have been public honors for Hughes \u2013 his smiling yearbook photo was displayed on the scoreboard overlooking the football field \u2013 much of the grieving in this community of about 200,000 people is playing out in private.\n <\/p>\n

\n Guards who monitor comings and goings at the high school were augmented by local sheriff\u2019s deputies. Grief counselors provided comfort, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organized<\/a> voluntary student prayer services.\n <\/p>\n

\"Hughes<\/p>\n

\n Less than 10 miles away, the Hughes home sat on a quiet street, vehicles packed into the driveway as friends and loved ones stopped by to help what is now a family of three.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt was just such a shock,\u201d said neighbor Bucky Walters. \u201cThe kids just loved them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Jason Hughes worked with the football team as what head coach Sean Pender called an academic and spiritual coach.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe never judged. He never forced anything on anyone,\u201d Pender wrote<\/a> on Facebook. \u201cHe simply loved people well. He met people where they were, lifted them up, and reminded them that they mattered.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Hughes\u2019 spiritual legacy was also noted in a statement released by the teen driver whose truck ran over the teacher.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ,\u201d he said in a written statement. \u201cHe will never be forgotten.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The young man\u2019s parents said their son shares the same feelings expressed around school about the respected teacher and coach.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cJason Hughes meant the world to our son,\u201d they said in a written statement. \u201cHe took the time to invest in (him) and poured his love into him, making a lasting impact.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n After speaking directly to the teacher\u2019s family, Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh told CNN on Friday that he would follow Laura Hughes\u2019 wishes and drop all charges against the students.\n <\/p>\n

\n Many in the community \u2013 from school to the Hughes\u2019 neighborhood \u2013 had hoped the wishes expressed by the family would be honored.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou know, in the culture we have, people need someone to blame,\u201d Walters said earlier in the week. \u201cBut sometimes these things are nobody\u2019s fault.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n At the door to Hughes\u2019 classroom, the tacked-on memorial messages speak to the legacy of the math teacher, even among those who never had him in class.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI enjoyed saying good morning to you, and seeing you absolutely made my day, everyday,\u201d reads one note.\n <\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s a legacy the superintendent says is especially important now as they all try to move on without the man who set that tone.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019ve heard a lot of people say we\u2019re going to have to pick up the slack, because Coach Hughes isn\u2019t here anymore,\u201d Schofield said.\n <\/p>\n

\n And the football coach who counted Hughes among his closest friends said the people who loved him know how to do it.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNorth Hall, let\u2019s honor Jason by loving people the way he did,\u201d Pender wrote. \u201cServe others. Lift people up. Lead with faith. Build relationships. Make connections. That\u2019s the legacy Jason Hughes leaves behind. And it\u2019s a powerful one.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
