The American flag was raised over the\u00a0US Embassy in\u00a0Venezuela<\/a>\u00a0Saturday for the first time in years, in a sign of shifting relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cA new era for US-Venezuela relations has begun,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0US Embassy team<\/a>\u00a0wrote in Spanish on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe morning of March 14, 2019, the American flag was lowered for the final time at US Embassy Caracas. This morning, on March 14, 2026, at the same time, my team and I raised the American flag,\u201d said\u00a0Laura F. Dogu, Washington\u2019s new top envoy to Caracas.<\/p>\n

The US\u00a0pulled\u00a0its embassy staff from Venezuela in 2019 due to the \u201cdeteriorating situation,\u201d after then\u00a0President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro cut off diplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The two countries only agreed to reestablish diplomatic ties after Maduro\u2019s Jan. 3\u00a0capture by US troops<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Star-Spangled Banner immediately caught the eyes of locals Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a good thing, really, what a joy,\u201d said Caracas resident Luz Ver\u00f3nica L\u00f3pez.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther countries must come back too because that\u2019s what we need \u2013 progress,\u201d he added. \u201cTo move forward with good relations with the rest of the world, as it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is positive; this is another step,\u201d said\u00a0Alessandro Di Benedetto, another Caracas resident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though Washington publicly says it has\u00a0\u201ca very good relationship\u201d\u00a0with\u00a0Venezuela\u00a0acting President<\/a>\u00a0Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, Maduro\u2019s former No. 2,\u00a0it doesn\u2019t see anyone once loyal to the despot leading the South American country over the long haul.<\/p>\n

Last week Reuters reported\u00a0the Trump administration was eyeing possible corruption and money laundering charges against Rodriguez if she did not continue to comply with the White House\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0draft criminal indictment, which the\u00a0US Attorney\u2019s Office in Miami\u00a0has been quietly building for two months, focuses on her alleged involvement in laundering money from Venezuela\u2019s state oil company, and is currently being used as a bargaining chip.<\/p>\n
