{"id":524407,"date":"2026-03-15T04:52:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T04:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/524407\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T04:52:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T04:52:09","slug":"former-steelers-p-corliss-waitman-signing-with-49ers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/524407\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Steelers P Corliss Waitman Signing With 49ers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Pittsburgh Steelers P Corliss Waitman is signing with the San Francisco 49ers, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tompelissero\/status\/2032932425861341586?s=46\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL Media\u2019s Tom Pelissero<\/a> and confirmed by Waitman\u2019s agent.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former Steelers punter Corliss Waitman is signing with the 49ers, sources tell The Insiders. <\/p>\n<p>Waitman\u2019s agent Alexa Stabler confirmed the deal. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GyzTlvgW1k\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/GyzTlvgW1k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomPelissero\/status\/2032932425861341586?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 14, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Steelers signed Cameron Johnston earlier in the week and now Waitman and the Steelers will go their separate ways. Waitman beat out Johnston in a competition ahead of the 2025 season, but had an up-and-down campaign. Waitman was signed after Johnston suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 1 of the 2024 season.<\/p>\n<p>Waitman also spent time with the Steelers in 2021, making his NFL debut with the team as an undrafted free agent out of South Alabama. He then went to the Denver Broncos in 2022 but didn\u2019t punt in a regular season game until 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Waitman averaged 45.5 yards per punt and had a net average of 41.7 yards. In 2024, he had a slightly better 41.9 yard net average.<\/p>\n<p>While the Steelers did sign Johnston, signing or drafting another punter to compete with him shouldn\u2019t be ruled out. Johnston did punt in three games with the Buffalo Bills and one with the New York Giants last season, but health could be a question mark. Adding another punter at least for training camp would make sense.<\/p>\n<p>Waitman is joining a 49ers team that released long-time punter Mitch Wishnowsky ahead of last season due to injury issues and replaced him with Thomas Morstead. It appears that the team could be moving on from Morstead and making Waitman its starting punter.<\/p>\n<p>While Waitman has only appeared in games with the Steelers and Broncos, the 30-year-old has spent time with multiple organizations on their practice squad or offseason roster. Those teams include the Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots and Chicago Bears.<\/p>\n<p>Waitman was also a strong holder during his time in Pittsburgh. With the 49ers kicking operation being unsteady at times last season, that\u2019s a trait the team likely values.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco made a run to the NFC Divisional Round last season and the team figures to remain contenders in 2025.
