{"id":524458,"date":"2026-03-15T05:33:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T05:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/524458\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T05:33:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T05:33:08","slug":"three-more-iranian-womens-football-squad-members-return-home-after-being-granted-asylum-in-australia-australia-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/524458\/","title":{"rendered":"Three more Iranian women\u2019s football squad members return home after being granted asylum in Australia | Australia news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Three more members of the Iranian women\u2019s football squad have left Australia, leaving behind teammates who sought asylum after playing in the Women\u2019s Asian Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The home affairs minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/tony-burke\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Burke<\/a>, said on Sunday morning the trio had decided to join the rest of the team in Iran, after being issued special protection visas to stay in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The decision means just three of the seven squad members who had sought asylum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/10\/iran-womens-football-team-asylum-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will remain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Players Mona Hamoudi, Zahra Sarbali and a team support staff member reportedly left Australia on Saturday night for Kuala Lumpur where they met up with other team members who are returning to Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The team were labeled \u201cwartime traitors\u201d after players <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/03\/iran-women-football-team-decline-to-sing-national-anthem-before-asian-cup-tie\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refused to sing the country\u2019s national anthem <\/a>before a match at the tournament. Their plight attracted international attention and even calls for support from the US president, Donald Trump, last week, amid the escalating Middle East war.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAfter telling Australian officials they had made this decision the players were given repeated chances to talk about their options,\u201d Burke said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhile the Australian government can ensure that opportunities are provided and communicated, we cannot remove the context in which the players are making these incredibly difficult decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Burke said the Australian government had done everything possible to make sure the women were provided with the chance for a safe future in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran\u2019s Tasnim News Agency said the latest three to leave Australia were two players and a support staff member. The three were \u201creturning to the warm embrace of their family and homeland\u201d, the news outlet said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three More Iranian Women\u2019s Football Team Members Withdraw Asylum Claims<\/p>\n<p>Three additional members of Iran\u2019s national women\u2019s football team have withdrawn their asylum applications in Australia and are now returning to Iran. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wNwI43hp1f\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/wNwI43hp1f<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tasnim News Agency (@Tasnimnews_EN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tasnimnews_EN\/status\/2032803381085966561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 14, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tina Kordrostami, an Iranian-born Sydney councillor, told US news outlet Fox News on Sunday that the returning women had been intimidated and \u201ccommunicated to directly by the regime\u201d in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe even had an individual amongst the girls within Sydney and Brisbane who was influencing them constantly, in their ear, letting them know that whatever Australia is offering them it will not work,\u201d Kordrostami said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen you see these women turning back to Iran and not seeking our help in Australia, do not think this is their request. They are being coerced, They are being threatened, they are being intimidated, this is not a choice of their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe only choice these girls have made in their entire lives &#8230; was the choice to remain silent during that first national anthem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Monday there was a tense standoff at the team hotel on the Gold Coast in Queensland, where anti-Iranian regime protesters gathered as the players prepared to board a bus taking them to the airport for their return flight to Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There were chaotic scenes at the Royal Pines hotel as government minders rushed into the lobby looking for the women understood to be seeking protection in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Protesters try to block bus as Iranian women's football team depart Gold Coast hotel \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4747.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>Protesters try to block bus as Iranian women&#8217;s football team depart Gold Coast hotel \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One player changed her mind on Wednesday, and contacted Iranian embassy officials. Others returned home with team officials via flights to Malaysia, and are still believed to be in Kuala Lumpur awaiting their return to Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tasnim\u2019s statement said the Iranian players had been subject to \u201cpsychological warfare, extensive propaganda and seductive offers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Federal minister Kristy McBain, speaking on ABC News on Sunday, dismissed the statement itself as \u201cpropaganda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think our government\u2019s been very open with the Australian people about the steps that we\u2019ve taken to ensure that these women in the Iranian soccer team and support staff had every opportunity to make their own decisions in this regard,\u201d McBain said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c You know, I think we can all understand propaganda when we see it.
