A bearded dragon outside.Image Via: HeartPixel/Shutterstock

(Image Via: HeartPixel/Shutterstock)

Yes, cat saliva can be dangerous for reptiles like bearded dragons.

Kitties carry bacteria in their mouths, including Pasteurella, which can cause serious infections in smaller animals. Even a minor scratch or small bite can introduce bacteria that may quickly become life-threatening for reptiles.

Because of this, most veterinarians and reptile experts recommend supervising any interactions between cats and reptiles very closely or avoiding direct contact altogether.

Even when animals appear calm around each other, cats are still natural predators, and their instincts can kick in very quickly.

That said, many people who share their homes with both reptiles and felines successfully keep them safe by maintaining separate spaces and carefully supervising any encounters.

And while the friendship between this Orange Cat and Tortellini, the bearded dragon, might look adorable on camera, responsible pet parents know that safety always comes first.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾

This story was originally published by Parade Pets on Mar 15, 2026, where it first appeared in the Pet News section.
