preparations.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling to DC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/alex-de-minaur-reveals-what-he-told-alejandro-davidovich-fokina-who-was-crying-after-his-washington-open-final-loss\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De Minaur defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina<\/a> in a three-set thriller to clinch the Washington Open title.<\/p>\n<p>The title was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/alex-de-minaur\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De Minaur\u2019s<\/a> 10th of his career, as the Australian returned to the top ten following the tournament.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Open<\/a>, De Minaur eased into the third round with a straight-sets win over Francisco Comesana.<\/p>\n<p>Playing some of the best tennis of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP Tour<\/a> career, De Minaur will no doubt be hoping to make a deep run in New York next month.<\/p>\n<p>Assessing his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> chances, one former Aussie tennis star has said what will need to happen for De Minaur to win the title at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Saville says the draw will need to \u2018open up\u2019 for Alex de Minaur to win the US Open<\/p>\n<p>During the latest episode of \u2018The Tennis\u2019, 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/australian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> doubles finalist Luke Saville responded when asked if De Minaur can win the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is definitely tough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I saw a clip the other day that he just keeps rocking up, every Grand Slam, and he is making the fourth little bit of a draw opening because those top two [Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz], especially, are pretty unreal right now, and if they keep going, he has to beat both of them to win a Slam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is difficult, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we need a little bit of love, but he is definitely showing up at every Grand Slam and getting into that second week \u2018dark horse\u2019, having picked up several good results at the event over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Alex de Minaur\u2019s impressive record at the US Open<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old has won more matches at the Australian Open and US Open (18) than at any other Grand Slam event.<\/p>\n<p>On two occasions, De Minaur has qualified for the quarterfinals in New York, and he\u2019ll likely be a contender href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/dominic-thiem\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dominic Thiem<\/a>, but came up short, losing out to the eventual champion in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the US Open quarterfinals four years later, De Minaur met British star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jack-draper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Draper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for De Minaur, injury issues prevented him from playing his best tennis on Arthur Ashe Stadium as he fell in straight sets.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll be hoping for a better showing this time around, and could be well placed to do so if he can maintain his current level.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still work to be done before he heads to New York, however, as De Minaur prepares for his Canadian Open third-round clash with his countryman Christopher O\u2019Connell on Friday, August
