{"id":526524,"date":"2026-03-16T08:30:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T08:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/526524\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T08:30:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T08:30:10","slug":"eastenders-airs-unannounced-return-for-fan-favourite-character-in-early-bbc-iplayer-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/526524\/","title":{"rendered":"EastEnders airs unannounced return for fan-favourite character in early BBC iPlayer release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>**Warning: Contains major spoilers for the Monday 16 March 2026 episode of EastEnders, available now on BBC iPlayer.**<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EastEnders<\/a> has aired the surprise return of a beloved character in the episode set on Mother&#8217;s Day 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC One soap&#8217;s Monday episode aired amusing scenes of the Beale clan coming together to celebrate the day, with Lauren Beale (Jacqueline Jossa) causing a stir by inviting her divisive father, Max Branning (Jake Wood), to join them.<\/p>\n<p>In early scenes, Lauren&#8217;s doting husband Peter Beale (Thomas Law) teased that he had a surprise for his wife on the special day, with Lauren&#8217;s lateness due to a talk with Max potentially threatening to ruin it.<\/p>\n<p>However, to Max&#8217;s chagrin and Lauren&#8217;s delight, the surprise was revealed to be Max&#8217;s former mother-in-law and Lauren&#8217;s grandmother, Cora Cross, played once again by British TV legend Ann Mitchell!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image__img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/16584454-high_res-eastenders-october-december-2018-11723f6-e1773486970148.jpg\" alt=\"Ann Mitchell in a blue coat as Cora Cross in a 2018 episode for EastEnders.\" data-item-name=\"Ann Mitchell in a blue coat as Cora Cross in a 2018 episode for EastEnders.\" title=\"EastEnders: Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) arrives back in Walford\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1 \/ 0.6785009861932939;object-fit:contain\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"474.95069033530575\" data-testid=\"image-img\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ann Mitchell as Cora Cross in EastEnders in 2018.\u00a0BBC<\/p>\n<p>Steely matriarch Cora is the mother of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\/eastenders-jo-joyner-on-tanya-return-newsupdate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren&#8217;s mother, Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner)<\/a>, and Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks), and appeared as a regular character from 2011 to 2015, before making further guest appearances in 2017 and 2018 &#8211; primarily as an adversary to Max.<\/p>\n<p>Cora really has never been a fan of Max&#8217;s and took the opportunity to make barbed remarks at his expense during the celebrations, particularly when he asked after his granddaughter Abi &#8220;AJ&#8221; Brannign Jr., who is living with Tanya after his reckless guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>It was revealed that Peter had invited both Cora and Tanya, but Lauren&#8217;s mother chose not to attend.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to digging at a riled Max enough that he was asked to leave, Cora also referred to a present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\/eastenders-mark-fowler-jr-stephen-aaron-sipple-recast-flash-forward-newsupdate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Fowler (Stephen Aaron-Sipple)<\/a> as &#8220;Muscles&#8221;, made comments on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\/eastenders-cindy-beale-michelle-collins-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;resurrection&#8217; even though neither she nor Lauren is aware that Mark is involved in criminal enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Cora also managed to catch her wayward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\/eastenders-oscar-branning-pierre-moullier-return-newsupdate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grandson Oscar Branning (Pierre Counihan-Moullier)<\/a> before she left and made clear how much she loves him despite his delinquent behaviour in recent years.
