The noise that spooked spring breakers at Daytona Beach<\/a> and caused massive stampede over the weekend was not caused by gunshots, the sheriff revealed Monday.<\/p>\n

The panic-causing sound had a much safer origin: people crushing water bottles.<\/p>\n

\"DaytonaCops explained what caused the chaos on the spring break spot. TikTok\/romandelangel4<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were zero gunshots on the beach,\u201d Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Monday after video showing hundreds of terrified beachgoers fleeing for their lives went viral.<\/p>\n

Chitwood added that there were 50 deputies in the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis incident was, clearly, social media driven. Let\u2019s all go and invade Daytona. And there isn\u2019t a whole lot more we can do other than what we did,\u201d Chitwood said.<\/p>\n

More than\u00a080 arrests were made at Daytona Beach over the weekend,\u00a0including\u00a0six\u00a0where\u00a0weapons were seized.\u00a0Chitwood said many were for open alcohol container violations.<\/p>\n

However, none of the\u00a0firearms arrests were made on the beach, Chitwood said, noting, \u201ceveryone can carry a gun in Florida.\u201d\u00a0He highlighted one adult and one juvenile cuffed in separate instances both for illegally possessing firearms.<\/p>\n

Chitwood added that seven illegal aliens were also arrested in the roundup.<\/p>\n

Four shootings were reported in the city since Friday, but none of them were the cause of the chaos.<\/p>\n

Chitwood said that all of the spring breakers taken into custody in the wake of the weekend rush were \u201cabsolutely polite and understood why they were being arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cities dotted along the Florida coasts are a hotspot for raucous spring break trips. In recent years,\u00a0Miami<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Fort Lauderdale<\/a>\u00a0mandated curfews to curb the chaos, sending college students packing further north to cities like Daytona Beach.<\/p>\n

The college kids come prepared with their fake IDs and suitcases full of booze for the weekend of their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some roll up to the beach with\u00a0BORGS\u2013Blackout Rage Gallons<\/a> \u2014 while others covertly sip on hard seltzers. <\/p>\n

Flashy sororities and fraternities bankrolled by students\u2019 well-to-do parents typically flock to the same places for spring break.
