Software company Atlassian<\/a> laid off 252 employees at its San Francisco headquarters last week, according to state filings.<\/p>\n

The local layoffs at the Australian company\u2019s office at 350 Bush St. are part of a larger plan to eliminate roughly 1,600 jobs worldwide \u2014 about 10% of the company\u2019s global staff \u2014 with most of the reductions concentrated in North America.<\/p>\n

The company is best known for popular workplace project planning and collaboration tools, including Jira, Confluence and Trello.<\/p>\n

Chief Executive Mike Cannon-Brookes called the layoffs an \u201cincredibly difficult decision,\u201d in a memo to employees<\/a>. \u201cI believe this is the right decision for Atlassian. But that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company said the restructuring was intended to \u201cself-fund further investment in AI and enterprise sales.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cannon-Brookes said artificial intelligence was reshaping the company\u2019s workforce needs, even if it is not directly replacing workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur approach is not \u2018AI replaces people,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBut it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn\u2019t change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas. It does.\u201d<\/p>\n
