\n\tWhen Ken Fulk and Kurt Wootton purchased what would become Durham Ranch<\/a>\u2014named after one of their dogs\u2014the California wine country<\/a> property was in disrepair, with a derelict 1940s ranch house and a handful of rickety outbuildings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThey acquired the 76-acre spread, set among rolling hills dotted with ancient oak trees about 15 minutes from the historic Napa Valley<\/a> town of St. Helena, in 2005 for $750,000. Over the next two decades, they did what designers do and transformed it into a blissfully secluded and thoughtfully calibrated weekend retreat\u2014one intentionally free of Wi-Fi, television, and even cellphone service.<\/p>\n

\n\tKnown for layered interiors infused with cinematic flair, Durham Ranch is quintessential Fulk\u2014his distinctly Western take on Americana, elevated with chic accents and designed with entertaining in mind. The original residence was beyond repair, so it was removed and rebuilt on the same footprint as a modest 1,250-square-foot home. The kitchen and dining room are open to each other, while a screened porch adds to its charm and bluestone floors, board-and-batten walls, and open ceilings reinforce the simple, farmhouse-inspired aesthetic.<\/p>\n

\n\tBuilt to feel as if it had always been part of the landscape, the party barn was a later addition by the couple. Spanning an impressive 4,500 square feet, it features polished concrete floors and a soaring, whitewashed interior where they\u2019ve hosted everything from intimate soir\u00e9es to elaborate weddings. Three oversized, glass-paneled garage doors open onto a 45-foot-long swimming pool, complete with an automatic cover, while a nearby bocce court adds to the property\u2019s leisurely appeal.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to the ranch house\u2019s two bedrooms, a pair of tented structures on a wooded hilltop offer rustic guest accommodations, complemented by the Cowboy Shack\u2014a hand-built pavilion created as an art piece and once featured in a traveling exhibition of historic artists\u2019 shacks. Manicured gardens of native, drought-resistant plantings surround the buildings and pool, while wooden boardwalks meander across the property, connecting its various elements.<\/p>\n

\n\tHilary Ryan of Sotheby\u2019s International Realty, St. Helena Brokerage,\u00a0holds the listing<\/a> for the $4.5 million country estate. Fulk and Wootton, who also maintain homes in San Francisco and Provincetown, Massachusetts, are staying local; they recently purchased a nearby historic residence dating to the 1850s.<\/p>\n
