\n\tSean Penn<\/a> opted out of attending<\/a> the 2026 Oscars<\/a> and was in the Ukraine when his name was called as the winner of the best supporting actor prize for his performance as Colonel Lockjaw in Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s best picture-winning \u201cOne Battle After Another<\/a>.\u201d It was the third Oscar win of Penn\u2019s career (following \u201cMystic River\u201d and \u201cMilk\u201d). But it turns out he was still awarded a trophy, with a twist fitting of the actor\u2019s activism efforts in the Ukraine. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn a video shared on social media by Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi (via Entertainment Weekly<\/a>), Penn is seen receiving an \u201cIronOscar\u201d in lieu of the real Oscar trophy he was not on hand to get in person. Pertsovskyi wrote in a caption: \u201cSean Penn opted for the trip to [Ukraine] vs. Oscar ceremony at Dolby Theater where he was awarded his 3rd. We couldn\u2019t leave our great friend and loyal Ukrainian Raiwlays passenger without an award. So, I have presented Sean with our IronOscar on behalf of all of us!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s what your presence here means,\u201d Pertsovskyi tells Penn in the video. \u201cYou\u2019re missing the Oscars, so we made you this one. This is from a railcar that was damaged by the Russians. The metal survived, so it\u2019s very special to us. It\u2019s not golden, but it\u2019s very real and from the bottom of our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are all treasures,\u201d Penn responds. \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA photo of the \u201cIronOscar\u201d reveals the following words engraved on the award: \u201cThis steel once carried millions of people away from war. Then a Russian missile came. We did not melt it into a weapon. We forged it into gratitude \u2014 for you. For your talent. For your courage to stand with Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPenn also earned praise Ukrainian president\u00a0Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> following his decision to skip the Oscars and be in the country instead. The Ukrainian leader posted a photo on X of the two men together and wrote: \u201cSean, thanks to you, we know what a true friend of Ukraine is. You have stood with Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale war. This is still true today. And we know that you will continue to stand with our country and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor his performance in \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Penn was also awarded the best supporting actor prize at the BAFTAs and the Actor Awards. He also did not attend either ceremony. At the Oscars, last year\u2019s best supporting actor winner Kieran Culkin (\u201cA Real Pain\u201d) announced Penn\u2019s victory and quipped: \u201cSean Penn couldn\u2019t be here this evening \u2014 or didn\u2019t want to, so I\u2019ll be accepting the award on his behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n
