{"id":531974,"date":"2026-03-19T02:33:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T02:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/531974\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T02:33:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T02:33:12","slug":"lausds-teacher-and-staff-unions-will-strike-if-no-deal-is-reached-by-mid-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/531974\/","title":{"rendered":"LAUSD&#8217;s teacher and staff unions will strike if no deal is reached by mid-April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The unions representing Los Angeles Unified teachers and support staff have given the district a &#8220;red line&#8221; of April 14 to reach a deal for new contracts, or else face an open-ended strike.<\/p>\n<p>The walkout was announced at a rally Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles.   <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, members of United Teachers Los Angeles and <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seiu99.org\/2026\/02\/23\/seiu-local-99-members-vote-97-to-authorize-unfair-practice-charge-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SEIU Local 99<\/a> voted overwhelmingly to give their leaders <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/education\/lausd-utla-teachers-strike-authorization-vote-what-happens-now\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the power to call a strike<\/a> as negotiations over pay and benefits stalled. <\/p>\n<p>Associated Administrators of Los Angeles, which represents principals, is also negotiating with the district.<\/p>\n<p>        Keep up with LAist.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re enjoying this article, you&#8217;ll love our daily newsletter, The LA Report. Each weekday, catch up on the 5 most pressing stories to start your morning in 3 minutes or less.  <\/p>\n<p>What happens now?<\/p>\n<p>A strike would almost certainly shutter schools for about 400,000 students, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/education\/lausd-seiu-local-99-reach-tentative-deal-following-three-day-strike\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as was the case during a three-day work stoppage in 2023<\/a>. The unions are seeking increases in pay for their members. The district has said it cannot afford what the unions have proposed.<\/p>\n<p>The unions are still working their way through the bargaining process, but have said the district&#8217;s offers do not meet their demands. UTLA appealed to LAUSD\u2019s board ahead of a committee meeting Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can settle this contract before we have to go on strike if you all are active in that process,\u201d Julie Van Winkle, UTLA&#8217;s vice president said. \u201cBut if that doesn\u2019t happen then we\u2019re still ready to go because we need to be able to afford to live in our cities and we need our schools to have basic resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Unified has maintained that it values employees, but needs to make tough financial decisions to reduce an ongoing budget deficit.
