{"id":532357,"date":"2026-03-19T07:16:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T07:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/532357\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T07:16:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T07:16:13","slug":"incumbent-mayors-donna-koch-in-northport-tom-gulbransen-in-old-field-win-reelection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/532357\/","title":{"rendered":"Incumbent mayors Donna Koch in Northport, Tom Gulbransen in Old Field win reelection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayors in Northport and Old Field were reelected Wednesday as voters\u00a0there and elsewhere went to the polls to decide a handful of village elections.<\/p>\n<p>In Northport, Mayor Donna Koch defeated Joe Sabia, a village trustee, to win a second four-year term, according to results from the village clerk&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>In Old Field, Mayor Tom Gulbransen won reelection to a two-year term, defeating trustee Rebecca Van Der Bogart, 95-62, Village Clerk Patty Rodier said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, results from the mayor&#8217;s contest\u00a0in Saddle Rock weren&#8217;t available late Wednesday night. Polls closed at 9 p.m.\u00a0Robert Kraus, a trustee, faced off against\u00a0Kambiz Akhavan for the open seat.<\/p>\n<p>In Northport, Koch&#8217;s victory caps\u00a0a contentious campaign during which both she and Sabia characterized their relationship as \u201cvery poor.&#8221; The final vote tally, according to Village Clerk Georgina Cavagnaro, was 917-532.<\/p>\n<p>Koch, 65, had framed her first term as a success, given that she updated the village&#8217;s comprehensive plan for the first time in\u00a050 years\u00a0and negotiated\u00a0police and highway worker contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Sabia, 69, whose four-year trustee seat is up this year, was making his second run for mayor. He had criticized\u00a0Koch\u2019s \u201charsh\u201d leadership style.<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0races<\/p>\n<p>Trustee seats also were up for grabs in some villages Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In Old Field,\u00a0<a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/towns\/old-field-village-election-filing-deadline-deb413dl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a ballot quirk<\/a> resulted in almost all candidates mounting write-in campaigns.\u00a0Incumbent trustee Robert Chase, the only candidate to appear on the ballot, won reelection with 107 votes, and former trustee William Schaefer received 106 votes to win the second trustee spot. Village justice Mitchell Birzon\u00a0received 55 votes to win another term.<\/p>\n<p>In Babylon Village, incumbent trustee Jeff Szabo defeated\u00a0challenger Jordan Hoffman, 511-256, according results from the village clerk there.<\/p>\n<p>Szabo, 53, <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/towns\/babylon-village-board-scwa-ceo-nv533xk5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had been appointed<\/a> by Mayor Mary Adams in October to fill the unexpired term of Sean Goodwin, who died unexpectedly the previous month. Szabo will serve the\u00a0one year left in the four-year term. Trustees earn $7,500 per year.<\/p>\n<p>Szabo ran on the Better Babylon Party line. He\u00a0has been chief executive of the Suffolk County Water Authority for 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman, 41, an attorney, ran on the\u00a0Jordan Hoffman for Village Trustee line. He&#8217;s a\u00a0lieutenant in the Babylon Fire Department&#8217;s rescue squad.<\/p>\n<p>In Plandome Manor, two incumbent trustees retained power, according to officials there.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia O\u2019Neill and Peter Kulka, of the People&#8217;s Party, received 178 votes and 166 votes, respectively, to win two-year terms.\u00a0Eric Kattan and\u00a0Sanaz Sadjadi,\u00a0running on the Community First line, earned 92 and 86 votes, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Garden City, eight candidates were vying for\u00a0four trustee seats in an election that served as a referendum on <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/towns\/long-island-village-elections-preview-e6ubzgjj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to deal with St. Paul\u2019s school.<\/a> Results were unavailable late Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>In Saddle Rock, the results of\u00a0three trustees races and a village justice race also weren&#8217;t available.<\/p>\n<p>Newsday&#8217;s Denise M.
