HOUSTON \u2013 Harris County leaders took a major step toward expanding one of Houston\u2019s busiest hospitals, despite ongoing controversy over how the project could impact nearby green space.<\/p>\n
In a unanimous 4-0 vote, the Commissioners approved moving forward with the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital using eminent domain. <\/p>\n
County Judge Lina Hidalgo was not present for the vote. She is out of the country on a trade mission.<\/p>\n
The decision allows the county to start acquiring and seizing land needed for the project. Critics have raised concerns, saying the hospital\u2019s footprint could extend into portions of Hermann Park.<\/p>\n

That year, residents backed a $2.5 billion bond package for Harris Health System projects. According to Porsa, the funding breakdown included:<\/p>\n
$1.6 billion for a new Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital facility<\/p>\n
$400 million to refurbish the existing LBJ hospital<\/p>\n
More than $100 million allocated for improvements at Ben Taub Hospital<\/p>\n
The current expansion effort builds on that broader push to modernize and increase capacity across the county\u2019s public hospital system.<\/p>\n

The eminent domain process is just beginning and could take time.<\/p>\n
Officials estimate it may take six to nine months before Harris Health can take possession of the land. After that, legal proceedings will determine how much property owners are compensated\u2014a process that could stretch longer if appeals are filed.<\/p>\n
