Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei<\/a> has said Iran\u2019s enemies were being \u201cdefeated\u201d in a written message for the Persian New Year, as the US and Israel continue to pound the country with attacks.<\/p>\n

In a statement read on Iranian television on Friday, Khamenei praised the steadfastness of the Iranian people marking Nowruz, which he said ushered in \u200cthe year of a \u201cresistance economy under national unity and national security\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment, due to the particular unity that has been created between you, our compatriots \u2013 despite all the differences in religious, intellectual, cultural and political origins \u2013 the enemy has been defeated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Khamenei has not been seen in public since he became supreme leader, following the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>, at the start of the war on February 28.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s supreme leader said that while the US and Israel believed that after one or two days of attacks, the Iranian people would overthrow the government, but this was a \u201cgross miscalculation\u201d.<\/p>\n

The war was launched under \u201cthe delusion that if the pinnacle of the regime and certain influential military figures were to attain martyrdom, it would instil fear and despair in our dear people \u2026 and through this means, the dream of dominating Iran and subsequently dismembering it would be realised\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Instead, \u201ca fracture has emerged in the enemy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Analysts have observed that the Iranian constitution itself was drafted with the spectre of a power vacuum in mind, a \u201csurvival protocol<\/a>\u201d designed to give the system the capacity to continue even at a moment of maximum shock.<\/p>\n

Khamenei also denied that Iran or its \u200callied forces were responsible for attacks \u2060against Turkiye and \u2060Oman.<\/p>\n

Those were \u201cfalse flag\u201d incidents used by Iran\u2019s enemy to \u201csow discord among neighbours, and it may occur in other countries as well\u201d, he claimed.<\/p>\n

The Turkish Ministry of National Defence last week said NATO air defences intercepted a ballistic missile<\/a> launched from Iran. Two people were killed in Oman<\/a> after drones came down in the Sohar province.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera\u2019s Ali Hashem, reporting from Tehran, said Khamenei\u00a0attempted to deliver a conciliatory message to countries in the region that have been affected by the war.<\/p>\n

But \u201che knows that there is a huge mistrust and lack of confidence,\u201d Hashem added.<\/p>\n

The supreme leader also called on Afghanistan and Pakistan to end their fighting and said he stood ready to assist.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider our eastern neighbours to be very close to us\u201d, the supreme leader said. \u201cI appeal to our two brotherly countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, to establish better relations with each other \u2026 and I myself am ready to take the necessary actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The neighbouring countries agreed to a temporary \u201cpause\u201d in hostilities during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr this week, after weeks of\u00a0deadly violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pezeshkian says Iran not seeking nuclear weapons<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian also delivered a Nowruz message, reiterating that his country does not wish to acquire nuclear weapons, which the former supreme leader had declared religiously forbidden.<\/p>\n

Pezeshkian also echoed Khamenei in saying Iran is not seeking war with its neighbours.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur difficulties are the result of the interference of enemies,\u201d he said. \u201cOur dear neighbours who surround us, you are our brothers\u2026 We have come to resolve all these differences with you,\u201d state media quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n

He also said Iran proposed that \u201cto establish peace and stability in the region, a regional security structure be formed from Islamic countries\u201d.<\/p>\n
