The weather alone \u2014 a bone-chilling 30 degrees in New York versus a blistering 85 in LA \u2014 made holding the world premiere of \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d at\u00a0Lincoln Center on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side on Wednesday perhaps a questionable move.<\/p>\n
Spies at the New York premiere say the film \u2014 even with its 156-minute run time \u2014 played well with the crowd. But the event itself felt disjointed due to the red carpet taking place on the Josie Robertson Plaza a good distance from the theater. <\/p>\n
Another source said that the stars\u2019 trek from the carpet to the theater delayed the start by an hour. <\/p>\n

Back in LA, a less starry press screening was held at IMAX\u2019s Playa Vista HQ on Wednesday evening for the film based on\u00a0Andy Weir\u2019s best-selling novel and starring\u00a0Ryan Gosling. <\/p>\n
But the pre-release buzz on\u00a0Phil Lord\u00a0&\u00a0Chris Miller\u2019s latest project is high enough that\u00a0Bill Lawrence\u00a0\u2014 the guru showrunner behind \u201cScrubs,\u201d \u201cSpin City,\u201d \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d \u201cShrinking\u201d and more \u2014 was on hand slumming it with a mix of trade reporters and industry types.<\/p>\n
Sources said Lawrence even generously shared instructions on how to score snacks within the office complex as treats were not part of the show. Some brave audience members went scurrying in search of the alleged nibbles, but most chickened out when they ran into an imposing-looking, \u201cEmployees Only\u201d sign blocking a breakroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Also spotted at the screening was former \u201cSNL\u201d star\u00a0Taran Killam\u00a0\u2014 sporting his burly beard from current series, \u201cStumble\u201d \u2014 as well as THR\u2019s \u201cFeinberg Forecast\u201d scribe\u00a0Scott Feinberg\u00a0which brings us to the commercial and awards season prospects of the sci-fi film about a lone scientist (played by Gosling) trying to save the world.<\/p>\n

Following the disappointing results of \u201cCrime 101\u201d Amazon\/MGM Studios\u2019 boss\u00a0Courtney Valenti\u00a0could use a win, and \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d is shaping up to be just that. Tracking has the film opening in the $70\u2013$78 million range and it currently has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. <\/p>\n
But the release weekend doesn\u2019t exactly scream Oscar (even though Gosling is getting great reviews and the technical elements of the film would seem to make it a contender).
