Adam Pearson responded to a comedian mocking his appearance, highlighting the harm of ableist jokes<\/p>\n

The actor, who has neurofibromatosis, emphasized the importance of respect and dignity for people with disabilities<\/p>\n

Neurofibromatosis affects about 100,000 people in the U.S. and can cause painful tumors and facial disfigurement<\/p>\n

British actor Adam Pearson<\/a> is clapping back at those who make fun of his appearance.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, March 19, the A Different Man star posted on X<\/a> and responded to a comedian who mocked his looks. The 41-year-old actor lives with facial disfigurement from a rare genetic condition called neurofibromatosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe and the boys after taking Chinese Peptides for\u00a0 5 years,\u201d the critic wrote alongside a photo of Pearson from the Oscars red carpet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was today years old when I learned that taking Peptides for 5 years made you an Academy member, award winning actor and Oscars attendee!\u201d Pearson responded. \u201cYou can tell a lot about a person’s character by looking at who they\u2019re willing to punch down towards – even in the name of comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several other social media users commented that the actor should \u201clearn how to take a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pearson replied, \u201cI took it and I responded. Freedom of Speech works both ways snowflake.\u201d He later told another person, \u201cIdeally I\u2019d like to not have my disability mocked but I guess that\u2019s too much to ask eh?\u00a0 I guess we should all \u2018suck it up\u2019 and \u2018move on.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The star also messaged another critic who wrote that he shouldn\u2019t be \u201ctreated differently because of a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think asking for respect and dignity (i.e. not being mocked for a disability) is being \u2018treated differently\u2019? Well that\u2019s certainly an interesting take,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not thrilled about ableism. Nor do I think anyone should be,\u201d he later commented.<\/p>\n

Pearson was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic condition that leaves his skin covered in thousands of thick, painful tumors.<\/p>\n

Neurofibromatosis 1 affects about 100,000 people throughout the United States, and only a few million in the world, Dr. Kaleb Yohay, the director of NYU Langone\u2019s Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Center, previously told PEOPLE. Patients can get the disorder from their parents or a random genetic mutation.<\/p>\n
