\n\tYour Friends & Neighbors star Amanda Peet<\/a> has revealed she\u2019s been diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress detailed her experience leading up to and following her diagnosis in an essay for The New Yorker<\/a>, which came as both of her parents were in hospice. <\/p>\n

\n\tPeet began the essay by recounting the myriad of close memories she has with her mother, whom she \u201ctold everything.\u201d She wrote, \u201cSo it was strange not to tell her, last fall, that I\u2019d been diagnosed with cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor many years, I\u2019ve been told that I have \u2018dense\u2019 and \u2018busy\u2019 breasts \u2014 not as a compliment but as a warning that they require extra monitoring,\u201d she continued. \u201cI had been seeing a breast surgeon every six months for checkups. The Friday before Labor Day, I went for what I thought would be a routine scan. Dr.\u00a0K. usually chatted me up while she examined me, but this time she went silent. She told me that she didn\u2019t like the way something looked on the ultrasound and wanted to perform a biopsy. After the procedure, she said that she would walk the sample over to Cedars-Sinai and hand-deliver it to Pathology. That\u2019s when I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe following day, her doctor shared a preliminary report: \u201cThe tumor \u2018appeared\u2019 to be small, but I would need an MRI after the holiday weekend to determine \u2018the extent of disease.\u2019 On Tuesday, we would also learn my receptor status, which indicates how tough your strain of cancer is. \u2018It\u2019s like dogs,\u2019 she explained. \u2018You have poodles on one end and, on the other, pit bulls.’\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter learning of the diagnosis, Peet\u2019s close family and friends rallied around her, but refrained from telling her mother due to her Parkinson\u2019s disease, she said. \u201cMy mom lived in a cottage twenty feet from our kitchen, but it didn\u2019t cross my mind to go tell her because she was in the final stage of Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d Peet wrote. \u201cShe still recognized me, and sometimes answered \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 to my questions, but always reverted to an empty stare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShortly after, Peet\u2019s sister shared news that their father was in ill health<\/a>. \u201cMy sister called: our father was about to die. Our parents, long divorced, were both in hospice, on opposite coasts. Our mother\u2019s had started in June, but our father\u2019s was only a week in, so we hadn\u2019t expected him to go first,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\n\tPeet explained that she did \u201cnot make it before my father took his last breath, but I got to see his body before it was taken from his apartment.\u201d She recounted the feelings of seeing her father after his death, adding, \u201cI felt guilty for not crying, but at least I got a reprieve from guessing how much longer I had to live.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Fatal Attraction actress noted that while \u201cmy mind should\u2019ve been flooded with memories\u201d of her father after his death, her mind was consumed with thoughts about her own health. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs soon as my dad\u2019s corpse was out of sight, I was free to panic about my cancer again,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid juggling her health, Peet and her sister grappled with telling her mother the news of their father\u2019s death. \u201cMy sister and I toyed with the idea of telling her that our dad had died, but it was impossible to gauge how much she could comprehend,\u201d she wrote, adding that as her mother\u2019s health had declined over the past few years, \u201cour talks had become shorter and shorter until I was only giving her positive, bite-size updates about my life.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tPeet\u2019s doctor soon after gave her an update, texting, \u201cAll poodle features!\u201d This meant her breast cancer was treatable. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was happier than I\u2019d been pre-diagnosis, when I was just a regular person who didn\u2019t have cancer. But after about ten minutes I remembered that I still needed the MRI and regressed to baseline terror,\u201d she wrote. \u201cDr.\u00a0K. said that the radiologist would check my lymph nodes, as well as \u2018the left side for any surprise findings\u2019 and call with the results within a week. It was dawning on me that cancer diagnoses come in a slow drip.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPeet noted that a radiologist went on to find a second mass in the same breast. Then, she had to endure an MRI-guided biopsy, which she described as \u201cwhen a tumor sample is extracted while you\u2019re inside the big white imaging doughnut.\u201d She recounted the experience in the essay, adding that, \u201cAs I left, the doctor told me it was fifty-fifty whether or not there was more cancer.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTwo days later, we found out that the second mass was benign, and that I would only need a lumpectomy and radiation, not a double mastectomy or chemo,\u201d Peet wrote, which led the actress and her husband to tell their children about their mother\u2019s diagnosis. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn January, two weeks after Peet had \u201cmy first clear scan,\u201d the hospice nurse suggested she call the mortuary, and \u201ctold me that my mom was going to die in a matter of days and that most people find it too painful to make arrangements in the immediate aftermath.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t The actress movingly recounted spending time with her mother before she passed: \u00a0\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure whether my mom knew that she was looking at me or whether I was just a constellation of interesting, disembodied shapes. I said \u2018howdy doodle\u2019 \u2014 that\u2019s how she often greeted me. But then I realized that she was communing without words, and I followed suit.
