Oscar-nominated actor Barry Keoghan<\/a> has said online abuse about his appearance is affecting his life, to the point that he now does \u201cnot want to go outside\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Irish actor, who is playing Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes\u2019 upcoming Beatles tetralogy, told SiriusXM<\/a> host Ben Harlum that though he left social media in 2024<\/a> due to online abuse, it was still so bad that he was \u201cshying away\u201d from the public eye \u2013 and it was making him want to retreat from acting.<\/p>\n

Asked about his fans, Keoghan acknowledged that some \u201cpeople are so lovely out there\u201d, but added: \u201cThere\u2019s also a nasty side of it. And I\u2019ve removed myself from online, but I\u2019m still a curious human being that wants to go on. And if I attend an event or if I go somewhere, you want to see how it was received. And it\u2019s not nice, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of hate online. There\u2019s a lot of abuse of how I look, and it\u2019s kind of past the point of, \u2018Everyone goes through that.\u2019 And everyone does, but it\u2019s made me shy away. It\u2019s made me really go inside myself, not want to attend places, not want to go outside. And I say this being absolute pure and honest to you \u2013 it\u2019s becoming a problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Keoghan said he is now \u201chiding away\u201d due the abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually don\u2019t go to places because of these things,\u201d he added. \u201cBut when that starts leaking into your art, it becomes a problem, because then you don\u2019t want to even be on screen any more.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2024, Keoghan, who has been candid about his difficult childhood in foster care<\/a> and the death of his mother after struggling with drug addiction, accused people of knocking on his grandmother\u2019s door<\/a> and \u201csitting outside my baby boy\u2019s house intimidating them\u201d after his breakup with pop star Sabrina Carpenter.<\/p>\n

Speaking to SiriusXM, Keoghan acknowledged that a retreat from acting would be disappointing for his fans, but, referring to his three-year-old son Brando, added: \u201cIt\u2019s also disappointing that my little boy has to read all of this stuff when he gets older.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keoghan\u2019s latest role is in Netflix\u2019s Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
