\n\tSPOILER ALERT:\u00a0This article contains spoilers for \u201cValerie Gets a New Chapter,\u201d the Season 3 premiere of \u201cThe Comeback<\/a>,\u201d now streaming on HBO<\/a> Max.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Comeback,\u201d as created by Lisa Kudrow<\/a> and Michael Patrick King<\/a>, was originally designed to be an ongoing series, a comedy that would go on until HBO or the creators themselves decided it had run its course. Sitcom actress Valerie Cherish (Kudrow) \u2014 who was being followed by reality cameras documenting her so-called comeback on a crappy network show called \u201cRoom & Bored,\u201d while also capturing every slight and humiliation \u2014 would have become just a character on a show.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut that\u2019s not what happened. Instead, the 2005 premiere of \u201cThe Comeback\u201d coincided with a rare weak period for HBO, when the network that had birthed \u201cSex and the City\u201d (which King ran for years) and \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d was suffering from an identity crisis. During those fallow years, the powers that be then running the company decided to cancel \u201cThe Comeback\u201d after a single 13-episode season.<\/p>\n

\n\tA funny thing happened, though, in the years after that cancellation. \u201cThe Comeback\u201d \u2014 which had amassed a small, loving audience during its run, especially as viewers began to see where it was going \u2014\u00a0ascended to cult-classic status. When HBO decided to revive it in 2014<\/a>, approaching King and Kudrow to ask whether they had an idea for a second season, bringing back a show was, at that point in time, still a rare thing, and not the commonplace event it is today, as mega-corporations try to suck dry their IP. No, \u201cThe Comeback\u201d had been revived by love.<\/p>\n

\n\tIts eight-episode second season tells the story about how Valerie learns that her \u201cRoom & Bored\u201d nemesis Paulie G. (Lance Barber) has created \u201cSeeing Red,\u201d a dark dramedy for HBO in which, in his heroin-addled mind, he was tormented by the star of his sitcom, a red-haired woman named Mallory Church. Storming into HBO to try to kill the show, Valerie ends up with the role of Mallory. Even though Valerie\u2019s husband, Mark (Damian Young), questions why she would ever get into business with Paulie again, and her former \u201cComeback\u201d producer Jane (Laura Silverman) \u2014 who also knows the dangers of Paulie, and wants to chronicle Valerie doing \u201cSeeing Red\u201d for a documentary \u2014 Valerie does end up winning an Emmy for her performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe\u2019s not there to accept it, though: Mickey (Robert Michael Morris), Valerie\u2019s hairdresser and constant companion, has been hospitalized, and in a shock to Mark and even to herself, Valerie ditches the Emmys ceremony to be by his side. Her Emmys departure also served as a formal rupture for \u201cThe Comeback,\u201d as Valerie is seen for the first time on screen as herself, not through the punishing cameras of the reality series or Jane\u2019s documentary.<\/p>\n

\n\tMore than 11 years later, the third and final season of \u201cThe Comeback\u201d is upon us, and the world around Valerie has changed. The season premiere opens in summer 2023, during the writers strike, on the eve of the actors strike, as Valerie is attempting to be the latest entry in the procession of Roxie Harts stunt-cast into \u201cChicago\u201d on Broadway. She\u2019s being documented by her social media assistant, Patience (Ella Stiller), with a reluctant Jane also in tow. (Mickey is no longer by Valerie\u2019s side: Morris died in 2017, having filmed the show\u2019s second season with Stage 4 melanoma.) After a three-year time jump, Valerie is confounded by a dilemma when her manager, Billy (Dan Bucatinsky) offers her forbidden fruit: The lead role in the first sitcom ever to be written entirely by AI.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview last week with Kudrow and King in King\u2019s office on the Warner Bros. lot, the creative partners discuss bringing the show back for a third, and they insist, last time. As opposed to previous seasons, the two of them wrote all of the episodes (with King directing all of them), and beginning the process in November 2024, when they\u2019d meet in person to hash it all out. They call Season 3 the completion of a trilogy, and even if \u201cThe Comeback\u201d was originally designed as a yearly series, they\u2019ve embraced what it\u2019s become: a \u201cweird gift,\u201d as King puts it, that materializes when there\u2019s been a \u201cseismic shift.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been an event,\u201d Kudrow says. \u201cSo I don\u2019t know how to make another event in a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tI assume Valerie Cherish just lives within both of you.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tLisa Kudrow: Yeah. She does.<\/p>\n

\t\tHow are you then translating that into a script that needs a beginning, middle and end?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Patrick King: We feel like there\u2019s a tee that you put the golf ball on, and then Lisa takes a swing at it. And we both take swings at all the characters. Every now and then, we go, \u201cThat\u2019s definitely in the show.\u201d It\u2019s usually an emotional density, and that laugh. I won\u2019t tell you, because it\u2019s in the last episode, but there\u2019s a couple of things Valerie says that I was laughing so hard. Even Lisa was laughing at something she was about to say.<\/p>\n

\n\tSo the structure is somehow organic. We know where we\u2019re starting, and we knew where we were ending. But the real machine of the show was figuring how we get the wheels to sort of wobble and almost come off this fictionalized thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWe met with some people \u2014 Lisa\u2019s a scientist, so she always wants to know what\u2019s the real truth of where they are. People react badly, not to medical AI, not to organizational AI, not even to clerical or personal. But when it comes to art, that was the one place people push back. So that gave us what I call it the Deep Throat spine of,\u00a0It\u2019s a secret. Don\u2019t tell anybody.<\/p>\n

\t\t\u201cThe Comeback\u201d has now created an entire universe of characters. How do you decide who we\u2019re going to see again? And what new characters need to come into Valerie\u2019s world?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Well, we always want a reason to see Jane, and we like Valerie being married to Mark. We knew they were going to be married and be OK. They had their rough patch in Season 2. You weather those storms, and usually it makes you even more solid, right? And Billy!<\/p>\n

\n\tKing:\u00a0And Billy, of course. Every character we\u2019ve ever seen in \u201cThe Comeback\u201d is legitimately someone we\u2019d like to see again. But it\u2019s only the people that are going to push Valerie to some place we need her to go.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe new people were necessary. Like, we lost Mickey. So with that, we lost that off-camera person thinking about what Valerie just said. Lisa sometimes calls him \u201cthe audience\u201d \u2014 like, you just heard that too, right? That became sort of a split job, but mostly it went to Ella Stiller, because we were thinking, what is the difference in this \u201cComeback\u201d? It\u2019s the collab-ing and the social media girl \u2014 and look around, every actor has a social media person who is younger and knows stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: And it also just felt funny. She\u2019s working for Valerie Cherish \u2014 like, that\u2019s not a great one, you know? But the great part is Valerie will pay you all day, every day, to be there to capture nothing. Nothing\u2019s happening!<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: That\u2019s right! \u201cWhat are your hours?\u201d \u201c24\/7.\u201d Valerie\u2019s like, \u201cSomething may happen while I\u2019m asleep!\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tI wondered whether she was a family friend. She\u2019s 20 in 2023, and she\u2019s still with her three years later!\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: I think that\u2019s the paycheck and relative ease \u2014 Valerie\u2019s not the head of Vogue, who\u2019s gonna snap somebody in half. She protects her, even: She says, \u201cShe\u2019s frail.\u201d The great thing about Ella is she\u2019s kind of Mona Lisa \u2014 she\u2019s non-threatening, and yet she\u2019s adorable. Valerie would feel safe around her in a job interview.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd then the other person would be Jack O\u2019Brien. We knew we wanted somebody who saw Valerie as a star. Because that was Mickey\u2019s great superpower, aside from all the love they had \u2014 he really thought Red was a star. We wanted, in a dark moment, for Valerie to have another person who saw her as a star, based on who she\u00a0used to be.<\/p>\n

Kudrow: Also to justify why Valerie wants him, at 86, to leave his retirement home every day to come do her hair. Because she\u2019s so just desperate for that comfort. And he\u00a0knew\u00a0Mickey.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: Our goal was to bring in somebody that Valerie feels has the same DNA. He\u2019s gay, he\u2019s older, he\u2019s unique, he\u2019s Celtic. We always brought him in as a placebo; we knew that the only way to bring him in was for him to say, \u201cI\u2019m not Mickey.\u201d So everybody could relax in the audience \u2014\u00a0we\u2019re not saying, \u201cOh, here\u2019s the new Mickey.\u201d\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0the one who says, \u201cI\u2019m not Mickey.\u201d And Jack O\u2019Brien is such an amazing being \u2014 he isn\u2019t an actor, yet he can be sublime as an actor.<\/p>\n

\t\tHe was on my flight home from SXSW. Valerie playing Roxie Hart \u2014 were there other possibilities for where Valerie would be in 2023, or were you like, OK, she\u2019d be the last stop for \u201cChicago\u201d?\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: NeNe Leakes, Erika Jayne, and all those people that went who were not Broadway performers \u2014 who, because of their reality shows went to Broadway \u2014 made it believable.<\/p>\n

\t\tWas that the real cast of \u201cChicago\u201d?<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: That was a Broadway cast that we brought out here that were from many different Broadway productions. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re in \u201cChicago\u201d now \u2014 I know they had been. We flew them all out. It was very decadent.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhen one of the \u201cSecret Lives of Mormon Wives\u201d women was being put in \u201cChicago,\u201d and we were profiling her<\/a>, I said, \u201cWe should profile the regular company of \u2018Chicago\u2019 and what it\u2019s like for them.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow:\u00a0Yeah! What is it like?!<\/p>\n

King: Year five in the 11-year hiatus between seasons, we knew \u201cChicago.\u201d We knew it would be funny to see Valerie as Roxie, and we picked the easiest number in that show \u2014 and she\u2019s failing at it.<\/p>\n

\t\tThat scene is the only time we see Jane in the season premiere before she walks off. How did you decide what Jane\u2019s relationship to Patience would be?\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Jane has nothing to do with social media. We decided she was there reluctantly.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: The trick was the money. We had have a hook, you know?? She\u2019s not doing it out of the goodness of her heart. That Valerie had loaned her money, and that she had to sort of do it out of guilt \u2014 that was the hook.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: She wants to do meaningful, important things that no one cares about, and won\u2019t offer her an income at all. And we saw she has this ranch in Topanga Canyon. It makes sense that she\u2019d need to borrow money at some point.<\/p>\n

\n\tThree years later, still nothing\u2019s happening, as much as she\u2019s loving her life. We had to cut a line where she just says, \u201cYou know what, Val? Stacking oat milk is so peaceful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tAt the Trader Joe\u2019s where Valerie runs into her next?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow:\u00a0She means it \u2014 \u201cand I have a girlfriend.\u201d Everything does sound great.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: There\u2019s a thing in the DNA of the show that every time someone connects to show business, some insecure part of them shows up. Jane is perfectly fine: She gets back into show business, and it all unravels. Jack O\u2019Brien\u2019s character, Tommy Tomlin, spouts off a couple of times, \u201cI\u2019m 85! I don\u2019t care what anyone thinks!\u201d The first day he shows up on set, he\u2019s wearing a toup\u00e9e, and says, \u201cIf anyone asks, I\u2019m 70.\u201d\u00a0Show business brings up who you are or want to be.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\tCan you talk about casting friend Fran Drescher, playing herself?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: When you are able to interface with people that are really famous, you\u2019re just so hopeful that they like the show, or \u2014 which always happens \u2014 that they\u2019re a fan of Lisa, because of how she presents herself in the world.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Or a fan of Valerie\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: We really wanted to have Fran in the show because of that moment in the strike which we duplicate, where she says, \u201cWake up and smell the coffee \u2014 AI is coming for us.\u201d That was really important to try to target that time. And then Fran was like, \u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d And then we created the second scene. The\u00a0first impulse was, it\u2019ll be this great cameo. And then it was like, \u201cI like Lisa so much \u2014 is there anything more?\u201d And I was like, \u201cYup!\u201d And then we created the second scene.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Dueling photo approvals!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

King: That that tells you that you\u2019re in \u201cThe Comeback.\u201d It\u2019s the first familiar cringe thing: Valerie talking too much to a celebrity.<\/p>\n

\t\tThree years later, Valerie\u2019s doing \u201cCherish\u00a0the Time.\u201d\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Uh huh! Her podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\tAbout \u201cThe Goodbye Girl\u201d!\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Watching some movie on TV? There is\u00a0nothing\u00a0happening.<\/p>\n

\t\tValerie and Mark have moved into Sierra Towers.\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: We wanted a change. And I thought Sierra Towers is funny, because it\u2019s mythic. Valerie\u2019s talking about who\u00a0used\u00a0to live there, not who lives there now. They feel like empty nesters \u2014\u00a0the Francesca element is on the East Coast. They say no more Brentwood.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe did want to reference the fact that the world shifted, and Valerie says, \u201cWe\u00a0almost\u00a0had to evacuate\u201d \u2014 almost, like that\u2019s the worst thing that could have happened.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: I mean, he feels adrift, right? And he\u2019s not recovering<\/p>\n

\t\tAfter Valerie\u2019s offered the job on the AI sitcom, she says to Mark, \u201cI need writers to like me.\u201d I thought that\u2019s an incredible line, because it summons Paulie G., and I don\u2019t know whether any writers have ever liked her. Tell me about that line \u2014 performing it and writing it, and the truth of that, after all we\u2019ve seen of Valerie.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Writers, writer-producers, the showrunners, the decision-makers, along with the studio or the network \u2014 they decide who they want in their shows. So if you\u2019re blackballed, then, no, you\u2019re not going to work. AI is the villain of the strike to her. Mark starts explaining things, and she\u2019s like, that\u2019s not the point! The point is, I need them to like me so that they\u2019ll\u00a0cast me!<\/p>\n

King: It wasn\u2019t an efforted moment at all when Lisa wrote, \u201cI need writers to like me.\u201d That\u2019s the most Valerie thing we\u2019ve said all day! \u201cI need writers to like me,\u00a0Mark\u201d \u2014\u00a0like she\u2019s explaining it to him. Because her adventures have been, if they don\u2019t like her, doesn\u2019t go well \u2014 it\u2019s ugly. She\u2019s from the \u201cI\u2019m It!\u201d world. Writers were king then \u2014 23 episodes. They like you, they write funny things for you. You\u2019re in TV Guide \u2014 not without writers liking you, you\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: And she can\u2019t be the first one on an AI-written show. Forget it! If it doesn\u2019t work out, nothing ever again. The stakes are high if she does that.<\/p>\n

\t\tWho is Valerie without Mickey beside her?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Who is she without Mickey beside her? She\u2019s on her own. She\u2019s her own cheerleader. She kind of has been, and he\u2019s just been affirming for her what she\u2019s already doing. But without him, there\u2019s no echo.<\/p>\n

King: There\u2019s no backup.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\tHow did it feel\u00a0to do the show without Robert Michael Morris?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Well, when we were writing it, that was a little \u2014 not tough, but at first a challenge, right? Who\u2019s gonna be the one making a face? There was a line we had to take it out that Robert Michael Morris had said, and it made us laugh so hard we started crying, and we just went [points upward], \u201cOK, thanks!\u201d We put it in, and then had to take it out later. But it felt like he was showing up.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat was the line?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: I don\u2019t remember.
Lisa, do you remember?<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Uh huh.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: What was it?<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: It was, \u201cAre they wearing pantyhose?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

King: In the second season, where the women are naked, and Valerie\u2019s stuck with them, Michael had never seen naked, shaved women. And he came up to me and he said to me, [sounding like Robert Michael Morris as Mickey],\u00a0\u201cWere they wearing pantyhose? And why?\u201d [Kudrow laughs hard]\u00a0<\/p>\n

I feel like Michael is a great success in the world. And even though he\u2019s not here, he feels like he\u00a0is\u00a0here. Just the fact that people ask about Mickey, or say, \u201cI wish Mickey hadn\u2019t died.\u201d That\u2019s a tribute.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kudrow: He\u2019s missed! That\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

Valerie changes her mind about the AI sitcom when she\u2019s a day player in an indie movie filmed at an assisted living facility, and one of the residents has a heart attack in front of her. She then immediately calls Billy. Was that always how Episode 1 was going to end?<\/p>\n

King: We hoped the audience would be entertained enough by Valerie\u2019s desperation \u2014 after a man has a heart attack, and she\u2019s in spandex \u2014 that she would then would get on board.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: She says, \u201cBilly, I\u2019m being stupid \u2014 set the meeting.\u201d Which I like, because, yeah, you are being stupid for setting the meeting if you\u2019re looking to avoid trouble!\u00a0<\/p>\n

King: I mean, the reality is, she hit rock bottom. Being in that movie, with that girl director and that person dying, in that outfit \u2014 not great, especially when she\u2019s being offered a\u00a0show.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: By the way, just to be clear, when I say, yes, you are being stupid to set the meeting, Valerie doesn\u2019t know that though.<\/p>\n

King: She\u2019s optimistic.<\/p>\n

\t\tThe way it\u2019s presented in the show, AI is the existential threat that we all feel, I think, in our daily lives. How much do you two feel that way, personally? And how much of that did you put into the show?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: I may live to change my mind: I\u2019m not as worried for myself as I am for the younger people coming up who aren\u2019t licensable yet. And for writers? It\u2019s been shrinking and shrinking since we started this. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a popular, obvious career choice anymore. It can\u2019t be. There\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing:\u00a0I feel like it\u2019s taking away the classroom. It can be excellent and fast, from what I hear. And the ideas are ever present. But what it\u2019s doing already is taking away the room \u2014 literally, the room \u2014 for people to learn how to think. To move their individual spark into a structure that can carry the day for them. And unfortunately, I think it will replace the growth spurt of a lot of writers. if it all does happen the way everybody\u2019s predicting, there won\u2019t be a need for trial and error. The error will be baked in. The trial will be out the window.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kudrow: Then you step outside the entertainment industry, and yeah \u2014 it\u2019s really worrisome. Even just on the administrative and business level of this industry, I think people are very afraid they\u2019re going to be replaced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKing:\u00a0 I, like Lisa, have oddly adapted Valerie\u2019s point of view, which is, maybe we\u2019ll keep going as humans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tMaybe!<\/p>\n

\n\tKing:\u00a0Maybe we\u2019ll keep going.<\/p>\n

\t\tI know you\u2019ve said it\u2019s a trilogy. But why does it have to be? What if, in a year you both were like, \u201cOh, my God, we have to do\u00a0this?\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Because it\u2019s been every 10 years, it\u2019s been an event. So I don\u2019t know how to make another event in a year.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: We\u2019re beyond grateful and giddy that we got to actually do this again and again. And we really put everything we had into this one. And it\u2019s not a ploy.<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019m sad. With the first season, you were planning a show, and you were going to do it every year.<\/p>\n

\n\tKudrow: Right.<\/p>\n

And then that didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

Kudrow: Right! Like, the second season, probably, Gigi is the showrunner \u2014 instead, it was 10 years later, and everything had changed. So all right, Paulie G. wrote an edgy, gritty, uncomfortable single-camera.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing: I mean, the brand was given to us. We thought the brand was going to be, \u201cWe\u2019ll do next season \u2014 and then we\u2019ll do probably three seasons in a row, and we\u2019ll have a lot of fun. Lisa\u2019s\u00a0phenomenal!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the brand that we were given was, \u201cOh no, we\u2019ll see you in\u00a010 years.\u201d And luckily, or unluckily, there\u2019s always been a seismic shift when we show up. We don\u2019t want to make it common. It\u2019s become too much of a gift.<\/p>\n

\n\tLook, Kate, I can sit here right now and tell you Lisa and I could go write an episode of Valerie goes to a yoga camp.\u00a0Adorable.\u00a0Funny! Great characters. She\u2019ll kill it. That\u2019s not what we became. We became kind of a satire of time and civilization moving forward in a weird way.<\/p>\n
