{"id":540005,"date":"2026-03-23T07:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T07:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/540005\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T07:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T07:09:11","slug":"mayor-hawaii-island-shifts-to-full-recovery-mode-post-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/540005\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor: Hawaii Island shifts to full recovery mode post-storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; Hawaii Island Mayor Kimo Alameda said hundreds of damage reports have already been filed following back-to-back storms in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe received over 300 responses in terms of damage assessments from the residents and over almost 100 just commercial,\u201d Alameda told Hawaii News Now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He said the county was still in recovery mode when the second Kona low hit this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/03\/18\/first-alert-weather-day-thursday-another-kona-low-brings-heavy-rain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/03\/18\/first-alert-weather-day-thursday-another-kona-low-brings-heavy-rain\/\">Hawaii News Now declared First Alert Weather Days through Sunday due to the threat of heavy rain and flash flooding.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through today. A winter storm warning also remains in effect for the summits of Hawaii Island through today, with possible heavy snow and strong winds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Alameda said that since the storm has passed over, the county will shift into full recovery mode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/CDDisasterRecovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/CDDisasterRecovery\">Hawaii County residents can report damage here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clean up and recovery<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Alameda said the county adjusted pickup schedules and expanded access to transfer stations and green waste facilities to help residents dispose of storm debris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe have about a little over 20 transfer stations and green waste facilities. And so we adjusted the hours. We made it possible for residents all over the island to take their debris to our green waste center,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He added that public works crews have been clearing debris along roads, especially main routes.<\/p>\n<p>Coordination with the state<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Alameda said Hawaii County has been communicating frequently with Gov. Josh Green and other county leaders as the state continues response and recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYeah, we have a real good collaboration right now with Governor Green, his team, as well as our team and the other mayors, we communicate back and forth kind of our situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He added that state and county leaders have been in contact with one another to ensure everyone is on the same page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Saturday, March 21<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Friday, March 20<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
