Early folding phones were notorious for the internal display being vulnerable to damage. Indeed, the first Samsung Galaxy Fold saw all pre-orders cancelled<\/a> because of this issue.<\/p>\n A new supply chain report suggests that Apple is adopting two further measures in order to protect the iPhone Fold<\/a> display, as well as reduce the visibility of the crease \u2026 <\/p>\n The Samsung Galaxy Fold disaster<\/p>\n The original launch of the Galaxy Fold is probably now a case study in industrial engineering classes.<\/p>\n It was only days after the first review units shipped when\u00a0the first problems<\/a>\u00a0with the device were reported. As more screen failure reports followed, Samsung\u00a0delayed the launch<\/a>\u00a0by \u2018at least\u2019 a month, and\u00a0took back review units<\/a>. Finally, the company cancelled all pre-orders<\/a> because of the issue.<\/p>\n A solution to the visible crease<\/p>\n One of the reasons Apple was said to have waited so long to launch a folding iPhone was that the company was unhappy with a very visible crease<\/a>. It was reported that the Cupertino company rejected multiple samples provided by display partner Samsung before\u00a0getting its own designers heavily involved<\/a>\u00a0to solve this problem.<\/p>\n Apple engineers were also said to have worked closely with Samsung on the hinge mechanism in order to protect the screen from damage.<\/p>\n Protecting the display<\/p>\n Previous reports said that\u00a0Apple would use\u00a0new button placements<\/a>\u00a0in order to reduce the risk of\u00a0damage to ribbon cables<\/a>\u00a0during the fold, and fit a much tougher built-in screen protector<\/a>.<\/p>\n Leaker Digital Cha<\/a>t<\/a> Station<\/a> today reports on further protective measures.<\/p>\n Apple\u2019s first foldable device will feature self-healing glass, a seamless hinge design, and a dual-layer UTG\/UFG glass architecture. In this configuration, the display panel is positioned between the two layers of glass, rather than in direct contact with the hinge.
