Dave Davies<\/a>, the iconic lead guitarist of The Kinks<\/a>, isn\u2019t having it with musician and activist Moby<\/a> after he called out the lyrics of the band\u2019s hit song \u201cLola\u201d in a recent interview.<\/p>\n

Moby, in part of an \u201chonest playlist\u201d feature for The Guardian (U.S.)<\/a>, named \u201cLola\u201d as the song he \u201ccan no longer listen to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLola by the Kinks came up on a Spotify playlist, and I thought the lyrics were gross and transphobic,\u201d said the musician. \u201cI like their early music, but I was really taken aback at how unevolved the lyrics are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 1970 number includes lyrics about a young man meeting Lola \u2014 someone who \u201cwalked like a woman but talked like a man\u201d \u2014 at a bar in London\u2019s Soho district. It has been celebrated<\/a> by LGBTQ+ community members and is considered by music critics to be<\/a> among<\/a> the greatest songs of all time. <\/p>\n

Ray Davies, lead vocalist and primary songwriter for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> group, told The New York Times<\/a> in 2020 that he \u201cdid a bit of research with drag queens\u201d while writing the song and noted that he admires \u201canyone who can get up and be what they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

His brother, Dave Davies, took to social media<\/a> on Sunday to declare that he\u2019s \u201chighly insulted\u201d by the comments from \u201c@thislittleidiot Moby.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also shared messages of support from<\/a> trans punk rock pioneer Ginger Coyote as well as<\/a> Jayne County, rock\u2019s first openly trans singer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard the song I was both thrilled and amazed that the Kinks would be singing a song about a trans person and wondered if anyone else had picked up on it!\u201d read the message from County.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho was cool or hip enough to realize what The Kinks we\u2019re singing about! Lola will always be one of those songs that for me \u2018broke the ice\u2019 so to speak! A song that breaks down barriers and brings a used to be, hush, hush subject to the forefront and makes it sound perfectly natural to be singing a song about a \u2018girl\u2019 named Lola!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave Davies, in a separate post<\/a> to X, wrote that he didn\u2019t want to show Moby up but advised him to \u201cbe careful what he says.\u201d<\/p>\n
