It’s a big week for the Washington Commanders and several intriguing prospects expecting to hear their names called early in the 2026 NFL Draft<\/a>. And one potential option for general manager Adam Peters at No. 7 overall got everyone’s attention with a blistering showcase of athletic intangibles.<\/p>\n

The Commanders could go in any direction with their first-round pick. Most thought it would be a defensive prospect before free agency, but that might not be the case anymore. This is the flexibility Peters wanted<\/a>. Even so, it’s imperative he gets it right with only two selections in the first four rounds.<\/p>\n

If there was one area that needed another dependable option defensively, it’s cornerback. Marshon Lattimore was released as expected<\/a>. Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene both left in free agency, and only Amik Robertson came into the franchise. The Commanders also have Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos, but that won’t be enough.<\/p>\n

Mansoor Delane’s pro day showcase won’t go unnoticed by the Commanders<\/p>\n

Mansoor Delane is gaining traction. He’s projected as the consensus best cornerback in this class, boasting traits that Daronte Jones needs for his defensive master plan to work. He’s a first-round lock, potentially even in the top 10. The explosive defensive back did nothing to diminish these claims at LSU’s pro day.<\/p>\n

Delane clocked a blazing 4.35 seconds<\/a> in the 40-yard dash, cementing what he put out on film with the Tigers last season and in the three years prior at Virginia Tech. The All-American wowed those in attendance, which is not going to go unnoticed by teams looking for the next great shutdown cornerback.<\/p>\n

Some prospects strongly linked to the Commanders may not be around<\/a> when it’s Peters’ turn to pick. Delane should be, and given Washington’s reported interest, he could be on the shortlist.<\/p>\n

The Commanders have reportedly scheduled an in-person visit with Delane<\/a>, during which they will likely put him through a workout and learn more about what makes him tick. Washington only gets 30 of these visits, not including local prospects, so it’s an indicator that Peters is at least curious about the corner’s capabilities.<\/p>\n

He won’t be alone in that regard. Delane is an elite boundary corner. He’s a fluid mover who mirrors opposing wide receivers effectively. There is a lot to like about his ball-tracking, and any quarterback who tested him last season tended to pay the price. While his tackling could be more consistent, he represents a Day 1 starter with an All-Pro ceiling.<\/p>\n

And if the Commanders want Delane, they might have to take him at No. 7 rather than trade down a few spots. That’s the only way to confirm things.<\/p>\n
