\n\tVince Vaughn<\/a> has some thoughts about late-night television. <\/p>\n

\n\tOn a new episode of Theo Von\u2019s podcast<\/a> \u201cThis Past Weekend,\u201d the two got to talking about how comedy has become more political in recent years, with Vaughn saying it\u2019s \u201cpart of the job because you\u2019ve got to talk about current events, but you don\u2019t want to become part of a group and feel like you\u2019re a champion for one ideology. You want to make fun of everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVon said Hollywood is a \u201cliberal place\u201d and Vaughn added an addendum: \u201cBut not really. It\u2019s more like, \u2018We\u2019re smart and got it figured out, and if you don\u2019t agree then you\u2019re an idiot.’\u201d He continued, \u201cThere was definitely a culture that if you didn\u2019t agree with these ideas, you were looked at as bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis attitude, said Von and Vaughn, bled into the late-night TV landscape, plaguing the programs hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and more. (Vaughn and Von did not name names.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of the late shows have struggled because \u2026 the only person they could make fun of at a certain point was white, redneck kind of people, and then everything tanked after that,\u201d said Von.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe podcasts have gotten so much more popular with less production, less writers, less staff. And the reason is \u2026 people want authenticity,\u201d added Vaughn. \u201cThe talk shows, to a large part, became really agenda-based. They were going to [evangelize] people to what they thought. And so people just rejected it because it didn\u2019t feel authentic. It felt like they had an agenda. It stopped being funny, and it started feeling like I was in a fucking class I didn\u2019t want to take. I\u2019m getting scolded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile many believe the reason late-night shows are in decline is shifting viewing habits and the move away from linear television, Vaughn thinks the main problem is the shows themselves.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe phenomenon isn\u2019t what they say. They always blame technology, but the reality is it\u2019s the approach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople are going to tune into a podcast more so because they want to feel like people are having a real conversation. It\u2019s interesting to them,\u201d Vaughn added. \u201cBut if you look at what happened to the talk shows and why their ratings are low, it\u2019s got only to do with the fact of what you just said, which is they all became the same show. They all became so about their politics and who\u2019s good and who\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVaughn has previously identified as a \u201clibertarian\u201d and, while he does not align with the MAGA movement, he caught heat last year for posing in a photo posted by Donald Trump in the Oval Office. Von asked the actor if he ever felt \u201costracized\u201d in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI always got along with people \u2026 and try to be honest about who I am,\u201d Vaughn said, adding, \u201cI have opinions on both sides\u201d of the political aisle. He said his early relationships in Hollywood were not colored by politics because \u201cwe weren\u2019t 23 sitting around talking about fucking taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cIf you\u2019re constantly worried what someone else thinks of you and you\u2019re only around them a couple hours a day, you\u2019re miserable most of the time. You\u2019ve got to find the way to be yourself, but be respectful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Vince Vaughn has some thoughts about late-night television.
