{"id":54449,"date":"2025-08-02T07:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T07:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/54449\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T07:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T07:25:11","slug":"daniil-medvedev-explains-why-he-was-proud-despite-losing-to-alexei-popyrin-in-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/54449\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniil Medvedev explains why\u00a0he was &#8216;proud&#8217;\u00a0despite losing to Alexei Popyrin in Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Daniil Medvedev continues to struggle in 2025, as he heads out of the Canadian Open.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian star began his North American hard-court season at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/washington-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Open<\/a>, where he lost to Corentin Moutet in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to action in Toronto, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/daniil-medvedev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Medvedev<\/a> defeated Czech youngster Dalibor Svrcina in his opening match to set up a third-round clash with defending champion Alexei Popyrin.<\/p>\n<p>Winning the first set, things were looking good for the world number 14 in Toronto before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/alexei-popyrin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Popyrin<\/a> battled back to secure the win in three, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2227967654-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Alexei Popyrin reacts during his win over Daniil Medvedev at the 2025 Canadian Open\" class=\"wp-image-116961\" \/>Photo by Matthew Stockman\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>After the match, Medvedev explained why he was \u2018proud\u2019 despite suffering an early exit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Daniil Medvedev was \u2018proud\u2019 of his behavior during Canadian Open defeat<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Russian media outlet \u2018Bolshe!\u2019 after the match, Medvedev highlighted the positives he\u2019s taking from his Canadian Open experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, the way I fought in this match, I think I behaved correctly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2227234827-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Daniil Medvedev returns the ball to Alexei Popyrin at the 2025 Canadian Open\" class=\"wp-image-116959\" \/>Photo by Julian Avram\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of myself for this, not for the result but because of what I did on the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of this, I believe that whether it\u2019s in Cincinnati, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a>, or even further in the future, at some point [the level] will return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the match itself, Medvedev claimed his serve let him down at times, as Popyrin secured breaks at the crucial moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played a few service games badly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a shame because I tried, it\u2019s not working out the way I want it to yet, but if I continue to do everything right, then at some point it will work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PlayerAcesDouble faults1st Serve %Win % on 1st ServeWin % on 2nd ServeBreak pointsDaniil Medvedev12853%76%57%2\/11Alexei Popyrin7761%84%48%3\/12Serving stats from Daniil Medvedev v Alexei Popyrin<\/p>\n<p>The Russian then shared whether he believed he played better against Popyrin than he did during his second-round win over Svrcina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played terribly in my last match; it was one of my worst matches this year, which is not the best. Nothing worked,\u201d said Medvedev.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, as I said after that match, that doesn\u2019t really matter; all that matters is that you win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOtherwise, you can walk around all year saying \u2018But at least I played well\u2019, the main thing is to win, and so far it hasn\u2019t worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev will now switch his focus to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/cincinnati-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Open<\/a>, an event he won back in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Daniil Medvedev won his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati six years ago<\/p>\n<p>During his breakout 2019 season, Medvedev qualified for four \u2018big\u2019 hard-court finals on tour.<\/p>\n<p>2019 Canadian Open2019 Cincinnati Open2019 US Open2019 Shanghai Masters<\/p>\n<p>After losing the Canadian Open final to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael Nadal<\/a>, Medvedev travelled to Cincinnati full of confidence, in search of a maiden Masters 1000 title.<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev was far from the favorite, entering the event as the number nine seed, although he quickly made his presence felt in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Making his way through to the semifinals without too much trouble, Medvedev took on Serbian legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novak Djokovic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>RoundOpponentResultScore1RKyle EdmundWin6-2, 7-52RBenoit PaireWin7-6, 6-13RJan-Lennard StruffWin6-2, 6-1QFAndrey RublevWin6-2, 6-3Daniil Medvedev at the 2019 Cincinnati Open<\/p>\n<p>In three sets, Medvedev defeated Djokovic to advance to the final, securing his second career victory over the now 24-time Grand Slam champion.<\/p>\n<p>Standing between Medvedev and his first Masters 1000 title was Belgium\u2019s David Goffin, who was appearing in his first Masters final.<\/p>\n<p>Goffin gave it his all but was no match for the towering Russian, who secured the win in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in his career, Medvedev was a Masters 1000 champion, but there was still work to be done in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1162628643-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Daniil Medvedev poses with the Cincinnati Open title in 2019\" class=\"wp-image-116967\" \/>Photo by Adam Lacy\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Heading over to New York for the US Open, Medvedev qualified for his third \u2018big\u2019 final in a row, as he met Nadal once more.<\/p>\n<p>Losing in five sets, Medvedev came up short in his first Grand Slam final, but bounced back to win the Shanghai Masters a month later.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing the year ranked number five in the world, Medvedev had established himself as one of the best hard-court players in the men\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old would no doubt love to rediscover that form now, as he looks to find some momentum leading into the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev will return to action when the 2025 Cincinnati Open begins on Saturday, August 9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Daniil Medvedev continues to struggle in 2025, as he heads out of the Canadian Open.
