Stop immediately if you experience pain.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in boosting your longevity? All you may have to do is vary your exercise. Switching between activities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/24\/health\/walking-full-body-exercise-wellness?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:walking;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">walking<\/a>, swimming, yoga, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/07\/health\/gardening-exercise-benefits-wellness?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:gardening;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">gardening<\/a> and pickleball could result in a whopping 19% decrease in your chance of death from all causes, according to recent research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 19% decrease is a big deal,\u201d said Dr. James Voos, chief of orthopedics at University Hospitals in Cleveland, who was not involved in the study. \u201cWhen you look at the literature, anything that has that significant of a response should encourage us to take a look at our habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An international team of scientists pored over data from two large cohort studies involving more than 110,000 people whose physical activity was assessed over 30 years. The findings, published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/5\/1\/e001513\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:BMJ Medicine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">BMJ Medicine<\/a> in January, showed that those who had the largest variety in their physical activity lived the longest.<\/p>\n<p>Engaging in many different forms of movement could also be more beneficial than doing the same activity for a longer amount of time, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Regularly engaging in varied forms of movement may boost longevity, a new study found. Bicycling can be a fun addition to your routine. &#8211; James Osmond\/The Image Bank RF\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the most surprising part of the study,\u201d said Dr. Han Han, one of the study\u2019s two first authors and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. \u201cWe\u2019re usually thinking more about the quantity of exercise. These results add a new dimension to the existing evidence in this field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adults should be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/odphp.health.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-09\/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans<\/a>, published by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The guidelines also advise adults to do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity at least twice per week, and note that varying your exercises can prevent overuse injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngaging in a variety of exercises is definitely beneficial,\u201d Voos said. \u201cYour body needs different ranges of motion, strength and stability, and cross-training lets your body see all of those different movements each week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true for children. Sports medicine experts have long encouraged kids to play multiple sports and not to specialize in one at a young age. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9638532\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:raft of data;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">raft of data<\/a> on the topic shows children who specialize in a sport when young have an increased risk of injury, while those who don\u2019t specialize tend to be healthier, are less bored with exercise and enjoy greater sports achievements when they are older.<\/p>\n<p>But adults and even professional athletes need to vary their routines, too. Voos, who is also head team physician for the Cleveland Browns, said NFL football players at training camp might do a lot of conditioning one day, then work on flexibility and balance the next, then move onto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/reviews\/best-resistance-bands?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features&amp;cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:strength training;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">strength training<\/a>, all of which is intermixed with playing football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even at the highest levels, our athletes are exposing their bodies to different motions,\u201d Voos said.<\/p>\n<p>Work every muscle group<\/p>\n<p>Another plus to shaking things up with your exercise routine, especially if you prefer one activity, is that it helps prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8834821\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the plateau effect;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">the plateau effect<\/a>. The plateau effect is a period of time when progress in your favored sport stops, because your body has become very efficient at the movements. But it\u2019s important to work all of your muscle groups each week, if possible, to strengthen them all.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean you have to run to the gym every day so you can alternate between the treadmill, rowing machine and weights. If you like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/health-fitness\/best-walking-shoes-2025?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features&amp;cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:walking;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">walking<\/a>, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/16\/health\/nordic-walking-benefits-wellness?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:use trekking poles;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">use trekking poles<\/a> every other day to give your arms some exercise. Or alternate cycling with digging in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/12\/health\/too-much-sitting-exercise-workout-wellness?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:even simple exercises;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">even simple exercises<\/a> done at work or home are beneficial, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo squats at your desk or push-ups on the wall,\u201d Voos said. \u201cTake a break and walk around the parking lot. Contract your abs while sitting to improve your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/reviews\/betterme-mini-pilates-reformer?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features&amp;cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:core strength;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">core strength<\/a>, which is important for balance. It doesn\u2019t have to be the most sophisticated thing. Anything you can sneak in is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pumped up about creating a new exercise regimen that might help extend your longevity? Remember it\u2019s also crucial to your health to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/23\/health\/recovery-days-training-wellness?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:incorporate rest days;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">incorporate rest days<\/a> into your program. Much as varying your workouts can help prevent overuse injuries and boredom, regular rest days will enhance your overall health. It\u2019s during these rest days, experts say, that your body repairs tissues and refills energy stores, among other crucial functions.<\/p>\n<p>But rest days don\u2019t mean laying on the couch all day.
