{"id":545870,"date":"2026-03-26T06:19:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T06:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/545870\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T06:19:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T06:19:22","slug":"report-metro-detroit-losing-ground-faces-hard-truths-about-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/545870\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Metro Detroit losing ground, faces \u2018hard truths\u2019 about economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Economic rankings for metro Detroit show the region sliding compared to 19 other US cities<\/p>\n<p>The Detroit Regional Chamber says the data should prompt urgency among policy-makers<\/p>\n<p>The area ranked last for per capita income, coming in a full one-third less than first-place Austin, Texas<\/p>\n<p>Metro Detroit\u2019s economy is falling behind peers and ranks near the bottom in factors from income to education, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitchamber.com\/research\/state-of-the-region\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new report<\/a> from the Detroit Regional Chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Released Wednesday, the chamber\u2019s State of the Region analysis should be a call-to-arms for policymakers and office seekers about \u201chard truths\u201d facing the region, Chamber CEO Sandy Baruah said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do a lot better,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd frankly, we need to do a lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When comparing metro Detroit to 19 areas with similar population sizes, economies and aspirations across the US, the report found the region:<\/p>\n<p>20th on per capita income, $42,100 compared to first-place Austin at $60,900<\/p>\n<p>19th on gross domestic product per capita, $6,400 compared to just over twice that for first-place San Francisco<\/p>\n<p>18th on educational attainment, with 47% of the population completing a higher education program. For population growth (CAGR, 2014\u20132024), Austin leads at 3%, followed by Nashville and Dallas at 2%, while Detroit ranks 17th with 0.2% growth.\" class=\"wp-image-74335\"  \/>(Courtesy of Detroit Regional Chamber)<\/p>\n<p>The state also ranked 19th in labor force participation rate, with about 63% of eligible workers holding or seeking jobs. The rate tops 70% in Denver, Austin and Nashville, the report notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a terrible, terrible number,\u201d Baruah said of the regional rate.<\/p>\n<p>Related:<\/p>\n<p>The new report follows a chamber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitchamber.com\/feb-2026-michigan-voter-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey released in February<\/a> showing the disparity between Michigan\u2019s lackluster economic performance and residents\u2019 impressions of it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, public perception is that Michigan ranks 28th in the US in attracting high-tech jobs. In fact, the state is 45th. Residents believe we\u2019re middle-of-the-pack in per capita income.
