{"id":546002,"date":"2026-03-26T07:53:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T07:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/546002\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T07:53:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T07:53:30","slug":"record-share-of-americans-carry-credit-card-debt-cant-pay-monthly-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/546002\/","title":{"rendered":"Record share of Americans carry credit card debt, can&#8217;t pay monthly bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A record share of Americans are unable to pay off their monthly credit card bills, compounding money woes for U.S. residents grappling with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/health-care-costs-americans-skip-meals-ration-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">affordability concerns<\/a>, according to a recent analysis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 111 million people \u2014 50% of Americans with a credit card and 40% of the U.S. adult population \u2014 carry credit card debt, according to a joint\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tcf.org\/content\/report\/interest-nation-the-state-of-americas-credit-card-debt-crisis\/?mc_cid=7b2612e193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">report<\/a> from The Century Foundation, a left-leaning think tank, and the advocacy group Protect Borrowers. That&#8217;s a 17% increase from the 95 million who were in the same situation five years earlier, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>The findings show that Americans were unable to pay their monthly credit card bills even before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-trump-tehran-denies-talks-israel-oil-prices-stocks-react\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">war in Iran<\/a> drove up oil and gas prices, now closing in on $4 a gallon, The Century Foundation president Julie Margetta-Morgan told CBS News. With fuel costs about 34% higher than a month ago, many households may find themselves even more financially strained, she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were already in an impossible financial situation for most consumers. Now gas prices are rising, and those are rippling throughout the economy,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Skipping meals<\/p>\n<p>One-quarter of Americans say they have skipped meals to cover their monthly expenses, while one-third report delaying or skipping medical care, a <a href=\"https:\/\/tcf.org\/content\/report\/survey-the-affordability-crisis-is-here-and-its-hitting-the-working-class-the-hardest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">separate study<\/a> from The Century Foundation found in December.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And that was before gas prices spiked,&#8221; Margetta-Morgan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Credit card debt is costly to hold, with the average interest rate standing at 23.7%, according to LendingTree.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers &#8220;are both carrying a high level of debt and paying exorbitantly high levels of interest on it,&#8221; Margetta-Morgan said. &#8220;We are in an unprecedented situation that keeps growing month to month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With financial pressures mounting on many households, some are tapping other sources of money, with a record share of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/401k-hardship-withdrawals-rise-vanguard-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dipping into their 401(k)s<\/a> to cover emergency expenses. Financial experts caution against such a step because tapping retirement assets can lead to penalties and may reduce a person&#8217;s financial readiness for retirement.<\/p>\n<p>$2.1 trillion in credit card interest<\/p>\n<p>President Trump in January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/credit-card-interest-rate-cap-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">floated a proposal<\/a> that would cap credit card interest rates at 10%, to prevent Americans from being &#8220;ripped off&#8221; by card issuers, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpDailyPosts\/status\/2009811806869696768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>\u00a0at the time.
