{"id":546319,"date":"2026-03-26T11:39:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/546319\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:39:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:39:21","slug":"googles-timeline-for-pqc-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/546319\/","title":{"rendered":"Google\u2019s timeline for PQC migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"fqs11\">Google\u2019s introducing a 2029 timeline to secure the quantum era with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1i2f0\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/innovation-and-ai\/technology\/safety-security\/the-quantum-era-is-coming-are-we-ready-to-secure-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">we called to secure the quantum era<\/a> before a future quantum computer can break current encryption. This new timeline reflects migration needs for the PQC era in light of progress on quantum computing <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/innovation-and-ai\/technology\/research\/google-willow-quantum-chip\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hardware development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-08449-y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quantum error correction<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2025\/05\/tracking-cost-of-quantum-factori.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quantum factoring resource estimates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cv6rc\">As a pioneer in both quantum and PQC, it\u2019s our responsibility to lead by example and share an ambitious timeline. By doing this, we hope to provide the clarity and urgency needed to accelerate digital transitions not only for Google, but also across the industry.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"65o40\">Quantum computers will pose a significant threat to current cryptographic standards, and specifically to encryption and digital signatures. The threat to encryption is relevant today with <a href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2024\/08\/post-quantum-cryptography-standards.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">store-now-decrypt-later attacks<\/a>, while digital signatures are a future threat that require the transition to PQC prior to a Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computer (CRQC). That\u2019s why we\u2019ve adjusted our <a href=\"https:\/\/bughunters.google.com\/blog\/googles-threat-model-for-post-quantum-cryptography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threat model<\/a> to prioritize PQC migration for authentication services \u2014 an important component of online security and digital signature migrations. We recommend that other engineering teams follow suit.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cco4o\">As an example of our ongoing PQC commitments, <a href=\"http:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2026\/03\/post-quantum-cryptography-in-android.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Android 17 is integrating PQC digital signature protection using ML-DSA<\/a> in alignment with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This continues to put advanced PQC technology directly into the hands of our customers, building on our <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/security\/resources\/post-quantum-cryptography?e=48754805\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google Chrome support for PQC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/identity-security\/how-were-helping-customers-prepare-for-a-quantum-safe-future?e=48754805\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">providing PQC solutions in Cloud<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/identity-security\/why-google-now-uses-post-quantum-cryptography-for-internal-comms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insights and guidance for leaders<\/a> on their PQC Journey.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dvnh5\">Stay tuned for more updates on our <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/security\/resources\/post-quantum-cryptography?e=48754805\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PQC transition<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Google\u2019s introducing a 2029 timeline to secure the quantum era with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration.
