The multiyear arrangement begins on Wednesday night, when the New York Yankees visit the San Francisco Giants.

This also represents an expansion of AbbVie’s Striking Out Cancer initiative in partnership with the Chicago Cubs, which launched in 2025. During that initial effort, AbbVie pledged to donate $233 to Cubs Charities for each strikeout thrown by a Cubs pitcher during home games.

Ultimately, AbbVie donated more than $162,000 from the strikeouts themselves before rounding up the contribution to $250,000. The hometown partnership with the Chicago Cubs continues in its second season.

Throughout the upcoming MLB season, AbbVie will also donate $20 for every strikeout across the league — up to a maximum donation of $1 million — benefitting Stand Up To Cancer. A strikeout tracker will allow fans to follow the impact over the season.

Additionally, AbbVie’s creative assets promoting Striking Out Cancer will be featured across MLB platforms, including MLB Network, MLB digital and social channels.

Matt Tritley, VP of corporate marketing at AbbVie, added that Striking Out Cancer will also be spotlighted during the MLB All-Star Game, MLB at Field of Dreams game as well as during the Wild Card Series, for which AbbVie will serve as the presenting sponsor.

Tritley said the core goal of the partnership is to scale the success of the original Striking Out Cancer project league-wide and connect baseball with cancer awareness, oncology advocacy and research support.

“There are a lot of opportunities to engage with people and take a moment like a strikeout — which is important during a game — and then even make that even more important by raising the visibility of how we’re all fighting against cancer,” he said.

While this iteration of the awareness work won’t focus as much on in-stadium advertising like AbbVie did at Wrigley Field, Tritley touted the company’s ambitions to feature the campaign across MLB Network and the league’s digital and social channels. Still, he added that AbbVie will feature select in-stadium moments during the playoffs.

Supported by Chicago-based sports agency partner rEvolution, the drugmaker plans to run 30‑second spots across numerous channels to help viewers better understand what Striking Out Cancer means and articulate the drugmaker’s commitment to the oncology space.

He also credited MLB with offering data and best practices for how to maximize fan engagement as this effort gets off the ground.

Image courtesy AbbVie, used with permission.

For the launch, Tritley said AbbVie is working with a handful of pitchers to share their cancer-related stories and reiterate their support of the program. These player-led activations are slated to continue throughout the season.

“We want to make sure our message is authentic since this isn’t, if you will, a marketing campaign,” he added. “This is about how we can help people better understand the importance of awareness of cancer, cancer advocacy, cancer research and our involvement in it.”

As more pharma brands lean into sports for opportunities to better engage with large, highly passionate groups of fans, some are taking it a step further from a strategic lens.

The MLB is now the second major North American sports league to announce an official pharmaceutical partner.

The decision was announced about one year after Novartis was announced as the official pharmaceutical partner of the NFL.

Tritley said AbbVie wasn’t influenced to pursue the MLB partnership due to the NFL-Novartis relationship, instead offering that the drugmaker aspires to scale up its existing program.

Like other health brands, he said AbbVie is focused on showing up at MLB games and broadcasts in a thoughtful, purposeful way to ensure its messaging is mission-focused messaging

For those seeking similarly-minded partnerships with sports leagues, Tritley said it wasn’t imperative to start with a proof of concept by working with an individual athlete or team.

Still, he suggested that working with the Cubs allowed the company to learn from the experience and subsequently adapt to different markets and fanbases.

Above all, he urged health brands seeking out sports opportunities to align these partnerships with a clear, purposeful medical mission — not just brand promotion.

“We felt that the MLB is a strong partner and that there were moments in time where the visibility of our brand and our messaging came through in a way that would be impactful,” he concluded.

This story first appeared on MM+M.

AbbVie is now the latest addition to the Opening Day roster. The 2026 Major League Baseball season is…

[65
363,99
post-547020","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mlb","tag-mlb","tag-sports
["GET
