{"id":547143,"date":"2026-03-26T21:26:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T21:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/547143\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T21:26:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T21:26:10","slug":"emma-navarro-pulls-out-of-charleston-open-tennis-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/547143\/","title":{"rendered":"Emma Navarro pulls out of Charleston Open tennis tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In withdrawing from her hometown tennis tournament, Charleston\u2019s Emma Navarro provided a glimpse into what\u2019s behind her struggles so far this season on the WTA Tour.<\/p>\n<p>Navarro, who has just a 4-9 match record this year as her ranking has plunged from a career-high No. 8 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/rankings\/singles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">her current No. 27<\/a>, cited \u201chealth struggles\u201d in withdrawing from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creditonecharlestonopen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Credit One Charleston Open<\/a>, which runs from March 28 to April 5 on Daniel Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super disappointed to not be playing the Charleston Open this year,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cThis tournament means so much to me, and I never take for granted the opportunity to play at home in front of my family, friends and the Charleston community, whose support is overwhelming and unconditional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, I have been dealing with some health struggles over the past year or so that I\u2019m continuing to sort out. I am working closely with my doctors and team to feel the best I can, but I just need a bit more time in doing so. I feel optimistic that I\u2019ll be back on court soon in the coming weeks, and I\u2019m already looking forward to competing in Charleston next year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Navarro, 24, made a sensational climb up the WTA Tour rankings after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/sports\/college\/charlestons-emma-navarro-wins-ncaa-national-title-in-womens-tennis\/article_db68ed7e-bfd9-11eb-8380-4be30d92ea8e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">winning an NCAA singles championship<\/a> at Virginia and turning pro in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>By September 2024, she was ranked No. 8 and had won two singles titles, with runs to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and a memorable charge to the semifinals at the 2024 U.S. Open. She was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/sports\/emma-navarro-wta-most-improved-player\/article_fdbfb15c-b641-11ef-88f6-e7b47b079b3b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most improved player on the WTA Tour for 2024<\/a>. And in 2025, she won her second career title.<\/p>\n<p>But 2026 has been a struggle for Navarro, who moved to Charleston when she was young and graduated from Ashley Hall School, where she was named the Post and Courier All-Lowcountry High School player of the year.<\/p>\n<p>She won two matches at the Adelaide International in Australia to start the season but has only won two matches since then.<\/p>\n<p>After losing in the first round at Indian Wells, she entered the Austin 125 to try to get some matches in but lost in the first round to No. 100-ranked Lulu Sun and then withdrew from the Miami Open.
