{"id":547492,"date":"2026-03-27T01:22:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T01:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/547492\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T01:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T01:22:10","slug":"kansas-city-not-part-of-latest-nba-expansion-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/547492\/","title":{"rendered":"Kansas City not part of latest NBA expansion news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NBA has laid the groundwork to expand, returning a team to Seattle and putting one in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Expansion isn\u2019t imminent in the NHL, but in an anonymous poll of 118 players conducted by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7016013\/2026\/02\/04\/nhl-player-poll-chirps-expansion-venmo\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;source=twitterhq\">The Athletic<\/a> last month, five cities were mentioned at least three times as a preferred next destination:<\/p>\n<p>Houston; Quebec City in Canada; Arizona (Phoenix); Atlanta; and Austin down in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas City doesn\u2019t seem to be on the expansion radar for either of those leagues. But as Kathy Nelson tells her staff at the Kansas Sports Commission\/Visit KC, \u201cIt\u2019s never no. It\u2019s just not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And although KC missed out in the most recent round of WNBA expansion, Nelson believes a women\u2019s pro basketball team will someday call T-Mobile Center home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still doing the work behind the scenes, we are still forming relationships, we\u2019re talking to the right people and we\u2019ve got the right ownership group built out,\u201d Nelson said.<\/p>\n<p>That group includes the owners of the National Women\u2019s Soccer League\u2019s KC Current: Angie and Chris Long and Brittany and Patrick Mahomes.<\/p>\n<p>Last June, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/news\/wnba-expansion-cleveland-detroit-philadelphia\">WNBA announced<\/a> new teams would be headed to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia. They will enter the league in 2028 through 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Cities with NBA franchises got the nod in that round of WNBA expansion. New teams in Toronto and Portland \u2014 also NBA cities \u2014 will enter the WNBA this season.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its bid, Kansas City had offered to build a practice facility in Riverside, site of the Current\u2019s training facility on the Missouri side of the state line.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas City will play host to a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/sports\/article314746015.html\">WNBA exhibition game<\/a> April 27 when the Minnesota Lynx meet the Nigerian women\u2019s national team. It will be the first WNBA game played at T-Mobile enter.
