After halting progress on the planned Dallas Wings\u2019 practice facility earlier this year, the Dallas City Council voted 13-2 Wednesday to allow the Wings to take over construction. <\/p>\n

The deal puts a $54 million cap on the city\u2019s funding toward the new practice facility, based on the original cost estimate when its development was introduced in June. Under the updated agreement, the Wings will cover an additional $27 million in anticipated costs, as the projected estimate has reached $81 million as of February. <\/p>\n

Failure to complete the project will result in the required repayment of any incentives received and the forfeit of any yet to be received in a new motion, said council member Chad West. <\/p>\n

The vote aims to propel the franchise\u2019s larger effort to relocate to Dallas, having been in Arlington and played in UTA\u2019s College Park Center since 2016. The Wings look to transition into Dallas\u2019 downtown area and host its home games at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Oak Cliff following renovations. <\/p>\n

Originally, the deal stated the city would manage and fund both the renovation of the center for the Wings\u2019 new home arena and the construction of the team\u2019s new practice facility, which was approved in April of 2024 under a 15-year agreement. <\/p>\n

A previous proposal included $653,000 in reimbursements for setbacks. The council amended this portion of the item Wednesday to remove all references to a delayed reimbursement. <\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the delays and the ups and the downs, we remain as committed as ever to our long-term partnership with the City of Dallas,\u201d Gregg Bibb, Wings CEO and managing partner, told The Dallas Morning News in an interview. <\/p>\n

While the team is set to have another full season at College Park Center, the project is moving forward again and the new facility at Joey Georgusis Park in Dallas is expected to be mostly completed ahead of the 2027 WNBA season, as of Feb. 25. Construction was previously set to finish in the spring of 2026, with a ceremonial groundbreaking held in September. <\/p>\n

The team is set to have another full season at College Park Center, as the new home arena isn\u2019t expected to have substantial completion until April 2027, in alignment with the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas Master Plan. <\/p>\n
