Why Americans Lose Time and Money Every Day

When life gets busy, we all have less patience for minor annoyances that waste our time and money. As it turns out, there’s an actual term for these pesky experiences we regularly encounter: the annoyance economy.

If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “Time is money,” you know it’s true. NBC News Business and Data Correspondent Brian Cheung stopped by Studio 1A on March 27 to break down the ins and outs of the annoyance economy — and revealed a startling statistic to TODAY’s Al Roker:

“We lose billions of dollars a year just by waiting around on hold with customer service, dealing with insurance, fighting those junk fees and so much more,” he said.

Here are three ways the annoyance economy is costing you — and Cheung’s top tips for taking back your hard-earned time and money.

3 Ways the Annoyance Economy Costing You Time and Money

Many of us have spent precious time dealing with the annoyance economy, but Cheung has some tips for making these pesky tasks more efficient.

Customer Service Calls

If you’ve ever spent an hour (or more) on hold waiting to speak with a customer service representative, you know the struggle is real. The experience becomes infinitely more frustrating when you can’t even reach a human being since so many companies now rely on automated answering systems.

To avoid some aggravation, Cheung recommends visiting gethuman.com, a website that can help you find direct customer service phone numbers for major companies.

Additionally, you can set yourself up for success by calling Tuesday through Thursday afternoon.

“Monday is the worst time to call because that’s usually when they’re jammed up. A lot of people experience things over the weekend. They have to wait until Monday,” he said.

After reaching a real human being, Cheung says it’s important to “stay calm and respectful” during the call.

“Yeah, because that’s not going to get you anything by screaming at anybody,” Al added.

When you do reach an experienced representative, you can always try asking for a direct number to reach them in case you get disconnected or need to follow up.

Other tips to consider:

Take the survey at the end of your call if you weren’t happy with your experience or the outcome. You might get a call back from the company.Try customer service via text message or online chat if it’s available so you can speak with someone while you’re on the go.Have all your information, paperwork and questions ready so you breeze through the call as quickly as possible.Keep a written record of your conversation: the person you spoke to, the date/time you called etc. This way, you have that information handy if you need to call back. Respectfully escalate the call to a supervisor if you’re not getting the answers you need.Junk and Service Fees

From concert tickets to hotels and airfare, consumers have been paying an increasing amount of so-called junk and service fees in recent years.

To save time and money, Cheung recommends always reading the fine print to understand what fees you’re paying and what they cover.

“There’s a new FTC rule — it’s about a year old — that requires companies like ticketing agencies as well as hotels and resorts to say exactly what the fees are when you do buy a ticket or you end up staying there for a few nights,” he said.

You might be able to waive some of the fees if you simply ask.

“If you have a resort fee and you say, ‘I’m not going to use some of those amenities. Can I get that fee waived?’ that can actually offer you some savings. And you might as well ask while you’re at check-in,” he said.

Cancellation fees are also somewhat tricky so Cheung suggests fully reading through the terms of canceling a booking.

“In the fine print, you might see if you cancel before a certain time you might have to pay a certain fee,” he said.

Additionally, auto-renew subscriptions like streaming services can cost you money you weren’t anticipating, so Cheung suggests regularly checking your subscriptions. An app called Rocket Money can help detect unused subscriptions to save you money.

Robo Calls and Phone Scams

We all dread robo calls and phone scams. If you’re hoping to avoid them, you can register for a national “Do Not Call” list by going to donotcall.gov and entering your phone number.

If you do get unexpected spam calls, it’s a best practice to avoid answering your phone if you don’t recognize the number. You can also directly block numbers and messages on your phone.

Many robo calls now use AI to mimic human voices, so it’s important to be extra cautious about answering those calls.

“These AI robo calls, they’re getting really accurate and they sound like real people. If you’re talking to it and it sounds like a real person but they have a weird delay, be very wary. Unless that person’s nervous to talk to you, there’s no reason there should be that delay,” Cheung said.

Other tips to consider:

If you do pick up a robo call by accident, hang up as soon as you don’t recognize the voice on the other end. Don’t give away personal information to someone from an unknown number.Don’t click links in a message from an unknown number.Be wary of calls or texts that say a package couldn’t be delivered to you.

When life gets busy, we all have less patience for minor annoyances that waste our time and money.…

[36
28,101
post-549261","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-economy
["GET
