\n\tJames Tolkan, the character actor who expressed a disdain for \u201cslackers\u201d in the\u00a0Back to the Future<\/a> trilogy and portrayed Tom Cruise\u2019s no-nonsense commanding officer in\u00a0Top Gun<\/a>, has died. He was 94.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTolkan died Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York, a family spokesperson announced.<\/p>\n

\n\tTolkan also played Napoleon and his look-alike in Woody Allen\u2019s\u00a0Love and Death (1975) and was the crooked accountant known as Numbers who works for Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) in Warren Beatty\u2019s Dick Tracy (1990).<\/p>\n

\n\tHe appeared in three movies directed by Sidney Lumet: as a cop in the Pacino-starring\u00a0Serpico\u00a0(1973), as a determined D.A. in\u00a0Prince of the City\u00a0(1981) and as a judge in\u00a0Family Business\u00a0(1989).<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Broadway, Tolkan portrayed salesman Dave Moss in the original 1984-85 production of David Mamet\u2019s\u00a0Glengarry Glen Ross. (Ed Harris played the character in the 1992 movie adaptation.)<\/p>\n

\n\tTolkan, whose specialty was playing intense, intimidating types, was steely as Hill Valley High School principal Mr. Strickland in\u00a0Back to the Future\u00a0(1985) and its 1989 sequel, then returned as Strickland\u2019s grandfather in\u00a0Back to the Future Part III\u00a0(1990). Pretty much wherever he went, fans asked him to berate them as \u201cslackers\u201d just for fun.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0Top Gun\u00a0(1986), he was imposing yet again as Tom \u201cStinger\u201d Jardian when he lights into Cruise\u2019s Pete \u201cMaverick\u201d Mitchell for reckless behavior.<\/p>\n

\n\tTolkan\u2019s big-screen r\u00e9sum\u00e9 also included\u00a0The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), WarGames (1983), Masters of the Universe\u00a0(1987),\u00a0True Blood\u00a0(1989) and Opportunity Knocks\u00a0(1990).<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, James Stewart Tolkan cycled through Chicago after his parents divorced and wound up in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, he attended Coe College and the University of Iowa, came to New York with $75 in his pocket and studied with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio, where Beatty was a classmate in 1956.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe made his onscreen debut in 1960 on an episode of ABC\u2019s\u00a0Naked City, and in 1966 he understudied for Robert Duvall <\/a>before replacing him as bad guy Harry Roat in the original Broadway production of\u00a0Wait Until Dark, starring Lee Remick. (Alan Arkin<\/a> was cast as Roat in the 1967 film.)<\/p>\n

\n\tLater, Tolkan played insurance investigator Norman Keyes on five episodes of NBC\u2019s\u00a0Remington Steele and several characters over 21 installments of A&E\u2019s\u00a0A Nero Wolfe Mystery\u00a0(he directed a couple of episodes as well).<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also guest-starred on\u00a0Miami Vice,\u00a0The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,\u00a0The Wonder Years,\u00a0Leverage\u00a0and many other shows.<\/p>\n

\n\tSurvivors include his wife, Parmelee, who worked at the American Place Theater as a costumes and scenery painter. They met on the set of the 1971 off-Broadway play\u00a0Pinkville\u00a0when he was acting in it and she was a prop girl, and they married that year in Lake Placid.<\/p>\n
