As the days lengthen, snow melts and temperatures rise, the thousands of elk that spend winters on the National Elk Refuge just outside Jackson, Wyoming, begin their journey north.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Their final destination: in and around Grand Teton National Park, where they\u2019ll spend the summer grazing at higher elevations.<\/p>\n<p>But this year, this seasonal rhythm \u2014 which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/national-elk\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">typically<\/a> kicks off in late spring or mid to late-April in Wyoming \u2014 has started earlier than expected, signaling an atypically meek winter for the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Jackson Hole News &amp; Guide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhnewsandguide.com\/news\/environmental\/mild-winter-spurs-exodus-from-national-elk-refuge\/article_ce856583-de6e-44af-bda3-5477432bee39.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that, since early January, at least 1,600 elk have left the refuge. Elk numbers on the refuge vary by winter; this winter, roughly 6,500 were counted at peak season.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, the Cowboy State Daily <a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2026\/02\/27\/mobs-of-elk-leave-refuge-near-jackson-with-false-sense-of-early-spring\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawQw83RleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEe9rKqWm5Vrs8MWa-tyhU9BuN1k9M7kX6kgGkrQkBSzZRdaipjz8mCOI1ijyw_aem_4gggNDFUEole0fiIownB_A\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that, as early as late February, \u201cmobs\u201d of elk had left the refuge, urged onward by a warmer and dryer-than-usual winter. Elk can usually be seen here from mid-December through early April, according to the refuge\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/national-elk\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> website.<\/a> (Visitors can safely get close to the elk on horse-drawn winter sleigh rides.)<\/p>\n<p>Refuge managers usually feed the elk to bolster populations during the winter, a controversial practice that some say congregates the elk in a way that could spread disease.<\/p>\n<p>The refuge didn\u2019t feed the elk this year, given the low snow cover. It\u2019s been a weirdly warm winter in western Wyoming, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhnewsandguide.com\/news\/environmental\/record-setting-heat-sizzles-jackson-hole-eviscerating-snowpack-over-a-month-early\/article_3624e25b-ead9-48ef-8cb8-1e5455900ea9.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record-setting heat<\/a> and a rapidly melting snowpack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Earlier migration than usual isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing for the elk, who will find what they need to nibble outside the refuge as long as a spring snowstorm doesn\u2019t drive them back south. Grand Teton National Park has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GrandTetonNPS\/posts\/-migration-season-is-herewatch-for-wildlife-on-the-move-as-elk-pronghorn-and-mul\/1184477573339959\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> visitors in the past to watch for wildlife on the move. \u201cAs elk, pronghorn, and mule deer make their way north into Grand Teton for the summer, they often cross roads, especially near river corridors and snow-covered areas &#8230; slow down, stay alert, and be extra cautious at dawn and dusk when animals are most active,\u201d a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GrandTetonNPS\/posts\/-migration-season-is-herewatch-for-wildlife-on-the-move-as-elk-pronghorn-and-mul\/1184477573339959\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Facebook post<\/a> from 2025 reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Obeying speed limits, some of which are lowered in key migratory corridors, scanning for movement, and braking instead of swerving can help drivers avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/national-parks\/article\/yellowstone-tourism-roadkill-mess-20253139.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife collisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Jackson elk herd that winters on the National Elk Herd is known for its prodigious migrations. It\u2019s one of North America\u2019s largest elk herds,<a href=\"https:\/\/wgfd.wyo.gov\/news-events\/game-and-fish-begin-new-elk-study\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> according<\/a> to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Some elk trek as far as Yellowstone National Park, which is over 60 miles away. But a growing number of elk are migrating shorter and shorter distances.
