{"id":55074,"date":"2025-08-02T13:43:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T13:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/55074\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T13:43:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T13:43:08","slug":"coco-gauff-predicts-what-will-happen-to-victoria-mboko-soon-ahead-of-their-match-in-montreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/55074\/","title":{"rendered":"Coco Gauff predicts what will happen to Victoria Mboko soon ahead of their match in Montreal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Coco Gauff has battled through her opening two matches in Montreal as she begins her US Open preparations.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/nick-kyrgios-gives-his-verdict-on-coco-gauffs-shock-wimbledon-defeat-to-dayana-yastremska\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff lost to Dayana Yastremska<\/a> in the first round of Wimbledon, she took some time to recover before kicking off her North American hard-court season.<\/p>\n<p>Making her return in Montreal for the Canadian Open, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/coco-gauff-shares-what-danielle-collins-has-always-treated-her-like-on-the-wta-tour-since-she-broke-through\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff survived a tough test against Danielle Collins<\/a> in round two to set up a third-round tie with Veronika Kudermetova.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"628\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2226992258-1024x628.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff celebrates her win over Danielle Collins at the 2025 Canadian Open\" class=\"wp-image-116179\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Dropping the first set, it seemed like the American was heading out of the tournament, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/coco-gauff-told-one-shot-she-needs-to-tweak-which-could-see-her-go-the-extra-mile\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff came through to defeat Kudermetova<\/a> 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>Next up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff<\/a> is home-favorite Victoria Mboko, a player she believes has the potential to be one of the very best.<\/p>\n<p>Coco Gauff believes Victoria Mboko will be a top-ranked player soon<\/p>\n<p>During her post-match press conference, Gauff previewed her last-16 clash with Mboko, looking back to their one previous encounter at the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/italian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Italian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, she\u2019s a great player. I mean, we played on clay, so it might be, well, it will be a different match,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, she\u2019s gotten more experience just being on tour and playing high-level players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if I were to play her, it would be a tough match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/coco-gauff-says-what-she-noticed-about-her-opponent-victoria-mboko-after-watching-footage-of-her-before-their-match-at-the-italian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff defeated Mboko<\/a> 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in Rome earlier this year, as the 18-year-old Canadian gave her a real scare when she took the first set.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2213629692-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff celebrates her win over Victoria Mboko at the 2025 Italian Open\" class=\"wp-image-89688\" \/>Photo by PIERO CRUCIATTI\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>As she prepares for her second career meeting with Mboko, Gauff shared her prediction about the world number 85.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s definitely playing like one of the top players in the world right now,\u201d said Gauff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer ranking will definitely match that soon. So yeah, it would be a tough match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defeating Kimberly Birrell, Sofia Kenin, and Marie Bouzkova en route to the last 16, Mboko moved herself into the top 70 in the \u2018Live WTA qualify for her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Montreal, she could jump to as high as 55th in the \u2018Live WTA Rankings\u2019, a mightily impressive feat for a player of her age.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian\u2019s 2025 breakout year has been incredible to watch, as Mboko continues to make a name for herself on the WTA Tour.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Mboko\u2019s 2025 season<\/p>\n<p>Mboko began the 2025 season ranked 350th in the world, but quickly made a move in the right direction, enjoying success on the ITF [International Tennis Federation] tour.<\/p>\n<p>In January and February, Mboko remarkably won 22 consecutive matches without dropping a set, as she clinched four ITF titles.<\/p>\n<p>A fifth title followed in March, as Mboko broke into the world\u2019s top 200 and made the step up to the href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/paula-badosa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Badosa<\/a> in a third-set tiebreaker in her second-round match.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/billie-jean-king-cup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billie Jean King Cup<\/a> debut with Canada followed in April before Mboko made her Grand Slam debut in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Advancing through qualifying, Mboko reached the third round on her major debut without dropping a set.<\/p>\n<p>2025 French Open Q1 \u2013 Victoria Mboko defeated href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/qinwen-zheng\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qinwen Zheng<\/a> in straight sets, 3-6, 4-6.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming a top-100 player after the tournament, Mboko returned to Grand Slam qualifying at Wimbledon, advancing once more, before losing her second-round match against Hailey Baptiste.<\/p>\n<p>The chances are Mboko will make the cut for the main draw of the US Open, thanks to her impressive results over the past few months, but she will be determined to pick up a few more big wins before she heads to New York.<\/p>\n<p>Mboko will be hoping the next big win isn\u2019t too far away, as she takes on Gauff for a place in the Canadian Open quarterfinals on Saturday, August 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Coco
