A great hammerhead shark that was found dead Thursday on Naples Beach, Fla., has been collected by scientists so a necropsy can be performed.<\/p>\n

The accompanying footage, captured by Christian Hernandez, shows the estimated 300-pound shark being placed via crane onto the bed of a transport truck.<\/p>\n

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will conduct the necropsy in the hope of determining the cause of death.<\/p>\n

The sight of the massive shark \u2013 on the beach and being lifted by the crane \u2013 generated lots of excitement.<\/p>\n

Naples resident Frederick Pulice told the Gulf Coast News<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve been living here in Florida ever since the 60s\u2026 I\u2019ve seen sharks but noting the size of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Great Hammerhead sharks, which can measure to nearly 20 feet, are globally listed as critically endangered<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re protected in Florida waters<\/a>, but are caught in federal waters and throughout and their tropical range via commercial fishing methods.<\/p>\n

Earlier in March, a smaller great hammerhead shark, measuring 12 feet, was found dead<\/a> near Juno Beach Pier in Palm Beach County. The shark had apparently been killed for its fins and an investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
