The war in Iran is driving down the world supply of oil and countries are scrambling to find alternative sources, so the Trans Mountain Pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby is operating at full tilt and could be at full capacity by April.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are looking for where can I get a little more supply, so that\u2019s part of the reason why we see April basically at capacity,\u201d TMX CEO Mark Maki told Global News over the phone on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The surge in demand is further fuelling plans to speed up the expansion of Trans Mountain\u2019s capacity and sparking new calls to build a new pipeline to move oil from Alberta to the B.C. coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we look at the data, we need to have more capacity and infrastructure to transport Canadian exploration,\u201d Gabriel Giguere, a senior policy analyst with the MEI Institute, said.<\/p>\n

However, B.C.\u2019s NDP government has long argued that with no private investor,\u00a0another oil pipeline is a non-starter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven\u2019t got a proponent, it\u2019s a very expensive proposal and there are dramatically cheaper alternatives,\u201d B.C.\u2019s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions Adrian Dix said.<\/p>\n
However, Greg Ebel, CEO of Canadian pipeline giant Enbridge, said on Bloomberg Television that the investment climate is not there yet, but it is starting to clear up.<\/p>\n
When asked if the Alberta pipeline would be a \u201chard no,\u201d Ebel said he wouldn\u2019t draw that line.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I would say is that the conditions don\u2019t yet exist for that pipeline to be built,\u201d he said. \u201cIf my customers get the green light to produce, Enbridge is the largest mover of oil in North America and is going to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

B.C.\u2019s Coastal First Nations said late last year<\/a> that they will use \u201cevery tool in their toolbox\u201d to keep oil tankers out of the northern coastal waters.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n Marilyn Slett, president of the Coastal First Nations \u2013 Great Bear Initiative and elected Chief of the Heiltsuk Nation, said in a statement at the time that this pipeline is \u201cnothing more than a pipe dream.\u201d<\/p>\n In November,\u00a0Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Alberta Premier Danielle Smith<\/a> signed a\u00a0memorandum of understanding\u00a0that commits them to working toward building an oil\u00a0pipeline\u00a0to the West Coast.<\/p>\n B.C.
