Martin Short wore a serious expression while stepping out in Santa Monica \u2014 his first public outing since his daughter Katherine\u2019s sudden death<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOnly Murders in the Building\u201d star wore what appeared to be a black blazer over a blue button down shirt while having dinner with longtime pal J.J. Abrams in the beach city on Friday evening. Short opted to go without a tie, and was clean shaven. <\/p>\n

Short, 76, appeared somber while stepping into a vehicle with the \u201cStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker\u201d director, as the pair appeared to chat during the outing. <\/p>\n

The outing comes amid a difficult year. Martin\u2019s only daughter, Katherine Short, died on Feb. 24 at the age of 42 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head<\/a>, according to a death certificate released by the Los Angeles County Dept of Public Health, per TMZ. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine\u00a0Hartley\u00a0Short,\u201d a rep for the comedian told Page Six last month. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Short\u00a0family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cKatherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin has since opted to take some time off, with the actor postponing two shows that were previously scheduled with Steve Martin. <\/p>\n

\u201cDue to unforeseen circumstances, Steve Martin & Martin Short\u2019s show, originally scheduled for Friday, February 27th in Milwaukee, has been postponed<\/a>,\u201d the Pabst Theater Group\u00a0wrote on\u00a0its website\u00a0Tuesday, noting that tickets would \u201cbe honored for a future rescheduled date.\u201d <\/p>\n

The comedic pair also rescheduled a show on Feb. 28 show in Minneapolis. <\/p>\n

Katherine \u2014 whom Martin shared with his late wife, Nancy Dolan, along with two grown sons \u2014 had shared details of her struggles with mental health<\/a>, divulging in a since-deleted professional website that she\u2019d adopted a service dog. <\/p>\n

\u201cJoni is my incredible service dog, who has been assisting me with my own struggles with mental illness for the past 5 years,\u201d Katherine wrote alongside a photo of the dog, who was named after Joni Mitchell. <\/p>\n

\u201cJoni will often be in the office with me, cuddled up on her bed,\u201d the clinical social worker wrote. \u201cShe is an absolute sweetheart and just LOVES people, so don\u2019t be surprised if she greets you with a smile, a wagging tail\u2026and maybe even a kiss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Katherine\u2019s death, Short had the support of Hollywood behind him \u2014 at the Oscars on March 15th, the show\u2019s host, Conan O\u2019Brien honored the iconic actor <\/a>while closing out the broadcast. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe love you, Martin Short! Good night!\u201d O\u2019Brien said. <\/p>\n
