WASHINGTON \u2014 So much for Connecticut.<\/p>\n

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)<\/a> raised eyebrows Saturday for posing with Jimmy Kimmel in California and attending \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests<\/a> there \u2014 a day after the Senate broke for recess while airport security lines remain in shambles due to a partial shutdown.<\/p>\n

Murphy posted a photo of himself with the \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d host at an anti-President Trump rally in Torrance, California \u2014 some 2,500 miles from his home state.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook who I ran into at the No Kings rally in Torrance, California,\u201d Murphy posted on X. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn LA this weekend and joined the South Bay No Kings rally. HUGE turnout!\u201d Murphy posted on X. <\/p>\n

The east coast Dem \u2014 is who rumored to have 2028 presidential aspirations \u2014 also touted a discussion he had with Californians pushing to ramp up taxes on billionaires.<\/p>\n

Notably, the California Billionaire Tax Act, a proposed ballot initiative, has drawn opposition from Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), another pol who has drawn 2028 presidential buzz.<\/p>\n

The proposal calls for a one-time 5% wealth tax on Californians with net worths over $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n

That tax would be retroactive for Golden State residents who lived in the state as of Jan. 1 this year. California had about 246 billionaires living in the state,\u00a0per Forbes<\/a>. Already, several top billionaires have fled the state<\/a> amid fears that they could face that tax. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn Los Angeles today I rallied with the health care workers who are supporting California\u2019s billionaire tax ballot initiative,\u201d Murphy posted on X. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no way to repair the damage Trump has done to our health care system without asking the super wealthy to pay their fair share.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy has carefully worked to burnish his progressive record during Trump\u2019s second term in office, having split with Democratic leadership in the Senate for cutting a deal to avert a government shutdown with Republicans in March 2025.<\/p>\n

He also publicly lamented the deal cut last fall<\/a> to end the 43-day government shutdown. <\/p>\n

Given his rising profile in progressive circles, netizens quickly seized on Murphy\u2019s unexplained visit to California and trolled him online.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is a senator from Connecticut hanging out in Torrance, California?\u201d conservative pundit Stephen Miller chided on X. <\/p>\n

\"NewJimmy Kimmel was briefly taken off air last year for his controversial comments about Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is a senator from Connecticut at a protest in LA and not like Hartford or New Haven,\u201d another X user wrote. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis one writes itself,\u201d actor Dean Cain jabbed. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love how he goes across the country to California instead of up the road in Connecticut which he (allegedly) represents,\u201d user \u201cAOC Parody\u201d griped.<\/p>\n

Not all of the reactions were negative. Murphy did get some love from progressive users, with lefty pundit\u00a0Joanne Carducci\u00a0writing, \u201cTwo of my favorite heroes!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post contacted Murphy\u2019s office for comment about why he was in California.<\/p>\n

The Senate had adjourned for recess early Friday after passing a deal to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security and end the shutdown that began on Feb. 14. <\/p>\n

House Republicans rejected that deal because it lacked funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WASHINGTON \u2014 So much for Connecticut.
