The third and most acclaimed one, \u201cThe Knockout Queen,\u201d was optioned for the screen in what she called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/24\/entertainment\/rufi-thorpe-margos-got-money-troubles-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnormal way,\u201d<\/a> by one company trying to make it into a movie.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00013b6qht9520tg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then she wrote her fourth novel, \u201cMargo\u2019s Got Money Troubles.\u201d And the process she\u2019d gotten used to was thrown out the window: The novel blew up before it was even on bookshelves, there was a crazed bidding war involving A24 and Elle Fanning, and less than two years after publishing, the adaptation is hitting Apple TV in April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00023b6q3yw2n9ww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The overwhelming majority of authors still never get to go Hollywood. But what was once a distant dream is now coming true for more and more authors, all up and down the ladder of literary fame and prestige.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00033b6qz0735kba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the streaming industry starving for stories to tell, a writer doesn\u2019t need to have already built up a blockbuster book franchise like \u201cThe Vampire Chronicles,\u201d \u201cHarry Potter\u201d or \u201cTwilight,\u201d to see their work become an onscreen pop culture juggernaut.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00043b6qtklfzwsp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s enough to have a niche hit: Rachel Reid\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/05\/entertainment\/heated-rivalry-gen-z-sex-romance-wellness-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d<\/a> didn\u2019t really take off until a viral recommendation by a fellow romance author; Julia Quinn\u2019s \u201cBridgerton\u201d series was hailed in the romance world but relatively unknown beyond; Mick Herron\u2019s \u201cSlow Horses\u201d did so poorly in its initial publication that the publisher turned down the next book. All have since become runaway hits for their respective streaming services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00053b6q0js40srh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Book adaptations have become so important in Hollywood that Netflix, a perennial book adapter, said its book-to-screen content found a spot in the streamer\u2019s global Top 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/lunch.publishersmarketplace.com\/2025\/12\/streaming-viewers-book-sales-grow-on-netflix-adaptations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">every week in 2025<\/a>. For many streamers, adaptations have become pillars of content, so much so that the platforms offer book adaptations as one of their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/hub\/tv\/collections\/4052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> browsing categories<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c-episodic-sabrina-lantos.jpg\" alt=\"Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) in \" heated=\"\" rivalry=\"\" which=\"\" became=\"\" a=\"\" huge=\"\" hit=\"\" for=\"\" hbo=\"\" and=\"\" drove=\"\" sales=\"\" of=\"\" the=\"\" books.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00073b6qqi1yeq09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Books have always been valuable assets in Hollywood, said Rich Green, who heads book-to-film\/TV development at management and production firm the Gotham Group. Decades ago, he said, his small list of book clients were what \u201ckept my phone ringing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00083b6qta8w8g80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At that time, movie studios both big and small were the main buyers. Streaming \u201cdramatically\u201d changed the landscape for book adaptations, Green said. Where studios may only make a handful of movies a year, streamers have \u201cinfinite bandwidth\u201d to create as much content as they can for hungry consumers scrolling through their televisions at all hours. With an increased need for stories, both published books and upcoming releases present an endless stream of ideas, Green said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw00093b6q1xczpuz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll of a sudden, you had the streamers coming to those who do what I do,\u201d Green said, \u201cand optioning quite aggressively.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw000a3b6q4td6h95v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That trend, he said, quadrupled his business.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw000b3b6qje3xk2ln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For authors, that can mean more involvement in the adaptation process. Thorpe holds an executive producer credit on \u201cMargo,\u201d a role that is becoming more common for authors of adapted works. \u201cHamnet\u201d author Maggie O\u2019Farrell helped Oscar-winning director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao adapt her novel for the screen \u2014 a process that <a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/maggie-ofarrell-on-grief-her-history-with-shakespeare-and-adapting-her-novel-to-the-screen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">she has said<\/a> involved lengthy Zoom calls and the exchange of voice notes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bw000c3b6q4jotk2ta@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many authors are still happy to sign a contract and wash their hands of the rest. But others can ask to maintain more creative control if interested, rather than the traditional practice of ceding it to the industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000d3b6qcvmafypq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHollywood is at a place where that request is no longer bothersome, intimidating, or \u2014 to the extreme \u2014 a deal-breaker,\u201d Green said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1-3000.jpg\" alt=\"Author Jenny Han was the showrunner for Amazon's \" the=\"\" summer=\"\" i=\"\" turned=\"\" pretty=\"\" based=\"\" on=\"\" her=\"\" novel=\"\" from=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000e3b6q2gsfj6um@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After executive producing the Netflix film adaptation of her novel \u201cTo All the Boys I\u2019ve Loved Before\u201d and its sequels, Jenny Han went on to be a showrunner for the hit series \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/entertainment\/summer-i-turned-pretty-finale-movie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Summer I Turned Pretty<\/a>,\u201d adapted by Amazon. That same year, she launched her own production company.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000f3b6q3ug6tjqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sarah Dessen, the prolific YA novelist, has witnessed the industry\u2019s change firsthand. Back in 2003, her first two novels, \u201cThat Summer\u201d and \u201cSomeone Like You,\u201d were smashed together into the film, \u201cHow To Deal,\u201d starring Mandy Moore. She never spoke to the screenwriter for that movie, though she was sent the script and asked for her opinion. She doesn\u2019t think her input  would have made a difference; there had already been so many eyes on the product, as is the norm when dealing with Hollywood behemoths.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000g3b6qx08gtarx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cut to 2019, when Netflix optioned three of Dessen\u2019s novels and produced the 2022 movie \u201cAlong for the Ride.\u201d Even with established stars attached, the entire process felt more collaborative, she said. Dessen developed a personal relationship with the executive producer, who\u2019d been a fan of her books growing up. Later, director and screenwriter Sofia Alvarez spent an hour on the phone with Dessen talking about the book. Once filming began, Dessen visited the set and Alvarez asked for her thoughts about certain scenes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000h3b6qknmm4muh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI do feel like they were a little bit more interested in my opinion and in what I thought about things,\u201d Dessen said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000i3b6qul1mmkow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are still many books that are optioned and never actually made into a series or movie. Even with the rise in adaptations, Dessen still called them a \u201clong shot,\u201d a sign of how difficult and extraordinary the process remains. But the heightened demand has affected every part of Hollywood.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000j3b6ql2l2r5p9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Literary scouts, once a luxury only major studios could afford, are now hired by producers and other clients to help sniff out the upcoming books that may be hiding a goldmine, \u00e0 la \u201cHeated Rivalry.\u201d In the internet age, that means looking beyond upcoming or existing novels from the big publishing houses and into self-published stories and other unconventional publishing avenues.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/170331103343-big-little-lies.jpg\" alt=\"Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman in \" big=\"\" little=\"\" lies=\"\" based=\"\" on=\"\" a=\"\" reese=\"\" book=\"\" club=\"\" pick.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"675\" width=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000k3b6q8vfau8ko@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s so many more books,\u201d one literary scout said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much more to wade through, because they\u2019re coming from all directions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000l3b6q32uc5xgv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Celebrity book clubs often also try to funnel their high-profile picks into buzzy on-screen adaptations. Reese Witherspoon has been the most prominent: See \u201cBig Little Lies\u201d and \u201cLittle Fires Everywhere,\u201d both Reese\u2019s Book Club picks that were transformed into streaming megahits, starring Witherspoon and produced by her own production company. (Just after production was announced for \u201cLittle Fires Everywhere,\u201d author Celeste Ng called celebrity book clubs<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/books\/2018\/03\/08\/celebrity-book-clubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> \u201cmiracle workers.\u201d<\/a>)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000m3b6q0prpui2e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Studio buyers used to accept printed galleys or Advanced Reader Copies of novels; now, buyers want to see manuscripts as early as possible, Green said. He\u2019ll often take a manuscript to Hollywood at the same time as the author\u2019s publishing agent pitches publishers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000o3b6qgwkmxbur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ten years ago \u2014 before scouts were the norm \u2014 studios might have paid a fortune to yank a manuscript from the Hollywood market before anyone else knew it existed, the literary scout said. Now, agents field interest from sometimes dozens of potential buyers, and authors can pick the deal most appealing to them. It doesn\u2019t always come down to money; sometimes, the winning bid has more appealing stars attached, or other factors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000p3b6qvhsp3d4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s more people in on the action,\u201d the literary scout said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000q3b6q4ndyizwj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wooing the author sometimes just comes down to chemistry, said Marshall, the \u201cHamnet\u201d producer.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/01-hamnet-4238-d005-00229-r-rgb.JPG\" alt=\"Jessie Buckley stars as Agnes and Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare in director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s \" hamnet=\"\" based=\"\" on=\"\" a=\"\" novel=\"\" by=\"\" maggie=\"\" o=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1687\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000r3b6q8v0iclrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDo they trust you? I think that\u2019s really key. Do you get along?\u201d she said. \u201cFor me, that\u2019s really important, I think, that there\u2019s a rapport between you and the novelist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000s3b6qysj4c5uf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sometimes, those relationships can get complicated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000t3b6qoz5netev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After Hulu passed on developing \u201cA Court of Thorns and Roses,\u201d author Sarah J. Maas said earlier this year she now re-owns the rights to her work and still wants to make an on-screen adaptation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000u3b6qvs0k7z9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI look at any TV or movie adaptation as another facet of the worlds I\u2019ve created,\u201d she said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M5iKSzjzTCw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on the podcast \u201cCall Her Daddy.\u201d<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s something I want to be in charge of.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000v3b6qudeksgp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That negotiation of ownership and control has led to other high-profile clashes. Min Jin Lee was initially set to be an executive producer for the Apple TV adaptation of \u201cPachinko,\u201d but she later dropped out of the production for reasons she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/the-new-yorker-interview\/what-min-jin-lee-wants-us-to-see\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declined to publicly disclose<\/a>. (Lee wasn\u2019t available to be interviewed for this article.) Turkish author Orhan Pamuk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/12\/world\/europe\/orhan-pamuk-istanbul-turkey-museum-of-innocence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spent years<\/a> suing a production company that he felt had taken too many liberties for a television adaptation of his bestseller \u201cThe Museum of Innocence.\u201d He won, and later worked with a different company \u2014 requiring his sign-off on every page of the script. The series premiered on Netflix in February, to middling reviews.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c-bridgerton-401-unit-02497r.jpg\" alt=\"\" bridgerton=\"\" has=\"\" become=\"\" a=\"\" streaming=\"\" hit=\"\" for=\"\" netflix=\"\" allowing=\"\" author=\"\" julia=\"\" quinn=\"\" time=\"\" to=\"\" pursue=\"\" other=\"\" interests.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn9ab1bx000w3b6q8bbmf5jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not every author is so concerned by how their works are reimagined. Julia Quinn, author of the \u201cBridgerton\u201d series, hadn\u2019t even been shopping the novels in Hollywood when she got a call from Shondaland in 2017. She gave up complete creative control from the start, she said. Hollywood adaptations of romance novels were rare; adaptations of historical romance were even rarer. She spent 18 months as an ambassador for EveryLibrary fighting book bans and is also on the board of global nonprofit Landesa, a feminist land rights organization.
