Hurt worked on stage, in films and in television and collaborated with her husband, Schrader, on \u201cAffliction\u201d and \u201cLight Sleeper.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born Mary Beth Supinger in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was married to actor William Hurt from 1971 to 1981. She studied acting at the University of Iowa and then at NYU and made her debut on the New York stage in 1974.<\/p>\n
She was Tony-nominated for her performances in \u201cCrimes of the Heart,\u201d for which she won an Obie, \u201cTrelawny of the Wells\u201d and \u201cBenefactors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Woody Allen cast Hurt in her first film role in the 1998 \u201cInteriors,\u201d in which she played one of the three sisters dealing with the breakdown of her family. She followed with \u201cThe World According to Garp,\u201d playing Helen Holm Garp, \u201cChilly Scenes of Winter,\u201d Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cThe Age of Innocence\u201d and \u201cSix Degrees of Separation.\u201d<\/p>\n
She told the New York Times in 1989 that she preferred to be selective about film roles. \u201cFifty percent of the roles I\u2019m offered in films are nothing. I don\u2019t mean sizewise. There\u2019s nothing of any interest in them. So I do the ones that are interesting, unless I haven\u2019t done one in a long while. Then I\u2019ll do one that isn\u2019t interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n
On television, Hurt guested on shows including \u201cLaw & Order,\u201d \u201cThirtysomething\u201d and \u201cKojak.\u201d<\/p>\n
She was nominated for an Indie Spirit award for 2006\u2019s \u201cThe Dead Girl\u201d and also appeared in \u201cYoung Adult,\u201d \u201cThe Exorcism of Emily Rose,\u201d \u201cThe Lady in the Water\u201d and \u201cChange in the Air.\u201d<\/p>\n
