The 70-year-old comedian\u2019s awkward interaction with Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, went viral last week after he snapped at them over their compliment that he looked great at 70.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram video<\/a> Sunday, Mandel said he debated addressing the situation at all, noting that he doesn\u2019t think comedians should have to apologize for their jokes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a joke. It is meant as a joke, and it\u2019s not meant to offend,\u201d he said of their exchange, adding that making the video was \u201chard\u201d for him as he hasn\u2019t apologized for anything in his 50 years as a comedian.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this is for Kelly Ripa, who in the past has been incredibly supportive,\u201d he continued. \u201cNot only have I been a guest on her show, but I have cohosted with her and I\u2019ve known her for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

He admitted that his response to the compliment didn\u2019t come off the way he wanted it to.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, he said he agreed with Ripa\u2019s sentiment that he looks great for his age.<\/p>\n

He concluded, \u201cAnd after a lot of thought and self-reflection, I look great for my age. I really do. I look fantastic and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent\u201d judge received backlash after the interview from fans who felt he reacted poorly to Ripa and Consuelos\u2019 well-intentioned compliment.<\/p>\n

Mandel told the hosts that noting he looks great at his age \u201cdoesn\u2019t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ripa then assured Mandel that the hosts were \u201cnot saying you look great for 70 [years old].\u201d Rather, \u201cWe\u2019re saying you look great and I don\u2019t believe you\u2019re 70.\u201d<\/p>\n
