Here\u2019s what changed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/taxes\/tax-laws\/tax-strategies-for-retirement-income\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_2&amp;utm_campaign=1327267&amp;utm_source=aol.com&amp;utm_content=4&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:and who should pay close attention;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">and who should pay close attention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A $6,000 Senior Bonus Deduction<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginning in the 2025 tax year through 2028, people 65 and older can claim an extra $6,000 deduction per person on top of the standard deduction,\u201d said Steve Sexton, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sextonadvisorygroup.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sexton Advisory Group;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Sexton Advisory Group<\/a>. \u201cFor married couples, they get $12,000,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the deduction phases out if modified adjusted gross income is more than $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for couples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re 65 or older, the new additional deduction matters to you immediately. It can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/taxes\/tax-laws\/tax-strategies-for-retirement-income\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_3&amp;utm_campaign=1327267&amp;utm_source=aol.com&amp;utm_content=5&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:taxable income in retirement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">taxable income in retirement<\/a>, especially in years when you\u2019re managing withdrawals or doing Roth conversions,\u201d Sexton said.<\/p>\n<p>Check Out: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/retirement\/social-security\/2026-senior-tax-deduction-social-security-retirement-planning\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=related_link_3&amp;utm_campaign=1327267&amp;utm_source=aol.com&amp;utm_content=6&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:What 2026 Senior Tax Deduction Means for Social Security and Retirement Planning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">What 2026 Senior Tax Deduction Means for Social Security and Retirement Planning<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Increased RMD Age<\/p>\n<p>The required minimum distribution (RMD) age recently changed to 73, giving seniors more time before they must start withdrawing from tax-deferred accounts, like a traditional IRA and 401(k), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/retirement\/iras\/what-sep-ira\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_4&amp;utm_campaign=1327267&amp;utm_source=aol.com&amp;utm_content=7&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SEP IRA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">SEP IRA<\/a>, and SIMPLE IRA.<\/p>\n<p>Delaying withdrawals can lower your taxable income in early retirement, but Gene Bott, CPA, tax advisor at <a href=\"https:\/\/taxhive.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tax Hive;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Tax Hive<\/a>, warned of the consequences. \u201cAn unexpected increase can raise your taxes more than you might expect. For example, higher distributions could push you from being taxed on 50% of your Social Security benefits to being taxed on 85%,\u201d Bott said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the penalty for missing an RMD has also been reduced to 25% from 50%, and \u201cRoth 401(k)s no longer require lifetime distributions from the original owner, meaning people will now have more flexibility in how they structure income on their taxes,\u201d Sexton said.<\/p>\n<p>Super Catch-Up Contributions<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2025, those ages 60 to 63 can make higher super <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/retirement\/accounts-and-plans\/why-catch-up-contributions-might-not-lower-your-taxes-anymore\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_5&amp;utm_campaign=1327267&amp;utm_source=aol.com&amp;utm_content=8&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:catch-up contributions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">catch-up contributions<\/a>. Instead of the standard $7,500 for 2025, you can now contribute up to $11,250 extra. \u201cThis marks a solid real opportunity for people who are in their peak earning years and want to make up for lost time,\u201d Sexton said.<\/p>\n<p>However, high earners need to pay attention. \u201cIf your income exceeds around $150,000 (adjusted for inflation), you may not be able to make these contributions as pretax contributions, but may be restricted to Roth contributions,\u201d Bott said.
