{"id":553299,"date":"2026-03-30T00:59:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T00:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/553299\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T00:59:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T00:59:08","slug":"tatsuya-imai-struggles-with-nerves-walks-in-astros-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/553299\/","title":{"rendered":"Tatsuya Imai struggles with nerves, walks in Astros debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mar 29, 2026, 07:41 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>HOUSTON &#8212; Though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5330833\/tatsuya-imai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tatsuya Imai<\/a> made more than 100 starts in eight seasons playing professionally in Japan, he admitted to having a case of the jitters Sunday in his major league debut for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/hou\/houston-astros\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Astros<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I went out there looking to have fun, but with that said, it&#8217;s a different environment from the time I was in Japan,&#8221; he said in Japanese through an interpreter. &#8220;I was kind of nervous, which may have been a bad thing, but it was just a different atmosphere for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Imai allowed three hits and four runs with four walks and four strikeouts in 2 2\/3 innings in Houston&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/recap?gameId=401814729\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">9-7 win<\/a> over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/laa\/los-angeles-angels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Angels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a disappointing debut for the three-time Japanese All-Star, who signed a three-year, $54 million contract this offseason after spending eight seasons with the Pacific League&#8217;s Seibu Lions.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48290175\/mlb-2026-new-top-ballpark-food\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/r1630937_2_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48307128\/mlb-opening-day-2026-most-interesting-giveaways\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/r1633929_899x899_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1 Related<\/p>\n<p>Manager Joe Espada was surprised that Imai walked so many batters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t expecting the scattering the zone,&#8221; Espada said. &#8220;He&#8217;s shown the ability to throw strikes. So, first one, we got that one out of the way. I&#8217;m sure that Imai can&#8217;t wait to get back on the mound.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Astros led by four with one out in the third when Imai walked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4666100\/zach-neto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Neto<\/a> before he moved to third on a single by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/30836\/mike-trout\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Trout<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4739755\/nolan-schanuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nolan Schanuel<\/a> walked to load the bases and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32558\/jorge-soler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jorge Soler<\/a> cleared them with his double to the corner in left field to get the Angels within one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40854\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jo Adell<\/a>&#8216;s two-out RBI single tied it at 4 and chased Imai.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-year-old Imai said he had about 10 friends and family at Daikin Park on Sunday for his debut.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Tatsuya Imai said he\u2019s still adjusting to the difference between a major league mound from the one he was used to pitching on in Japan, one reason behind his control issues Sunday.\u00a0Houston Astros\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to perform better for them and get through five innings today, but as you saw, I threw up too many pitches in the first and second innings,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, I didn&#8217;t perform up to the level that I wish to for them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Along with his rookie jitters, Imai said he&#8217;s still adjusting to the difference between a major league mound from the one he was used to pitching on in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a difference in the slope of the mound compared to Japan, so I&#8217;ve definitely felt that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So I want to get on that as soon as possible and make adjustments so when the next time I go out on the mound and deal with the slope again, I can adjust to it better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though Imai acknowledged being nervous on Sunday, veteran catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/31389\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian V\u00e1zquez<\/a> said he couldn&#8217;t tell and he thinks there are things he did in his first game that he can build on moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think he was calm, very calm,&#8221; V\u00e1zquez said. &#8220;Sometimes in a debut &#8230; you see in the eyes that he&#8217;s nervous or know (there&#8217;s) a lot of like emotion going on.
