This means there will be plenty of opportunities for players to adapt to the red dirt before the top tournaments get rolling. ATP Houston Day 1 Predictions
\nAdolfo Vallejo vs Zachary Svajda<\/p>\n
Head-to-head: first meeting<\/p>\n
Vallejo comes into this having played almost exclusively on clay since the start of the year and should therefore be well-suited to the surface. Svajda, on the other hand, will be making his clay debut for the year at this tournament. Despite his time on clay, Vallejo has been far from dominant on the surface, but should still have enough to trouble his American counterpart. Svajda has had the benefit of playing better players and has won a few of those matches as well. This, coupled with the home advantage, should serve him well and give him the edge.

Jack Pinnington Jones vs Zhizhen Zhang<\/p>\n
Head-to-head: first meeting<\/p>\n
Pinnington Jones came through qualifying, ending a bad run prior, which had seen him lose four matches on the spin. Zhang, on the other hand, comes into this having received a wild card. Like his opponent, he has also lost his last four matches coming into this tournament. He is a much better player than that record and his ranking suggests. But coming into a new surface with no momentum and no regular time on court so far is likely to prove decisive.
Prediction: Pinnington Jones in 3<\/p>\n
Colton Smith vs Thiago Agustin Tirante<\/p>\n
Head-to-head: first meeting<\/p>\n
The young American, Smith, received a wild card into this tournament. He also comes into this with a bit of feel-good factor, having won a Challenger event in Cleveland last month. He has since lost his last three matches, however. Tirante has had a stop-start season, having failed to make a deep run in any of the tournaments he\u2019s played so far. This one could easily go either way, but I\u2019m tipping the American to find some inspiration again while playing at home.
Prediction: Smith in 3<\/p>\n
Alex Bolt vs Yibing Wu<\/p>\n
Head-to-head: first meeting<\/p>\n
The Australian, Bolt, has made it into the tournament via qualification, where he will now face the Chinese, Wu. Wu has not had a good year so far and will be hoping the clay season brings with it a reset. He is certainly much better than his ranking suggests, and this, on paper, is a good match-up for him. The Australia\u2019s best years are probably behind him. It remains to be seen which version of Wu shows up, but if he is playing anywhere near his best, then this feels like a match that is his to lose.
Prediction: Wu in 2<\/p>\n
Mackenzie McDonald vs Jenson Brooksby<\/p>\n
Head-to-head: McDonald 1 \u2013 2 Brooksby<\/p>\n
An all-American affair featuring two players who have had a less-than-stellar start to the year so far, they will be hoping the clay court season brings about a change in fortunes. Brooksby marginally leads the head-to-head, but it probably has no bearing, as the last of those matches was in 2022 and none of them were on clay. Brooksby has also struggled more for wins this year, although he\u2019s admittedly played tougher opposition than his countryman. He would hope this is the tournament he finally gets some momentum, and I think so too.
