Consumer confidence has reached a new low, according to a new report<\/a> by consumer app Shopfully.<\/p>\n

Their annual The State of Shopping report<\/a>, released today, shows 60 per cent of Aussie shoppers believe their purchasing power will not improve in the coming months, an increase of six per cent since 2025.<\/p>\n

Shopfully surveyed over 500 Australians<\/a> via their app in February 2026 and found customers are coping with continuing cost-of-living pressures by becoming increasingly strategic in their spending.<\/p>\n

The research has also shown there is less shopper loyalty as two-thirds of Aussie shoppers (67 per cent) take the time to compare prices across multiple retailers to ensure they are securing the best deal before making a purchase.<\/p>\n

That means retailers are no longer battling to win customers, but are in competition over a single transaction.\ufeff<\/p>\n

“Today’s shoppers are savvier than ever and far less likely to stick with a single retailer or brand if their expectations around value aren’t being met,” Brendan Straw, Shopfully Country Manager for Australia, said.<\/p>\n

“For retailers, this means showing up with the right offer at the right moment.”<\/p>\n

Dwindling customer loyalty has been acknowledged by supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths, with the grocery retailers acknowledging “cross shopping” is on the increase as shoppers seek out the best prices possible.<\/p>\n

Others cost-of-living strategies being used by Aussie shoppers include reducing non-essential purchases (45 per cent), prioritising products on promotion or offering the greatest savings (44 per cent), and switching to cheaper brands or private labels (35 per cent).<\/p>\n

Both Coles and Woolworths reported significant increases in customers choosing their own brands over more expensive name brands over the past several months and 47 per cent of consumers are actively seeking lower-priced brands across a range of products compared to last year, according to a Monash University study<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new report also found 69 per cent of shoppers still prefer shopping in stores, up from 41 per cent in 2025, however are taking the time to compare prices online before doing so. An increasing number of shoppers using AI for this.<\/p>\n

Nearly half of those surveyed (48 per cent) reporting promotions and deals strongly impact their purchasing decisions and these are increasingly being discovered online.<\/p>\n

Two-in-five (39 per cent) are delaying their purchases until annual sales periods in a bid to save on household items, clothing, footwear, and other non-essential items.<\/p>\n

The next major sales period in Australia will be the mid-year and end of financial year sales in June.<\/p>\n
