{"id":555002,"date":"2026-03-30T22:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T22:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/555002\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:35:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T22:35:13","slug":"new-york-times-cuts-ties-with-book-review-writer-over-ai-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/555002\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Times Cuts Ties with Book Review Writer Over AI Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times has cut ties with a freelancer after the paper discovered he used AI to help write a book review that inadvertently incorporated elements of a Guardian review on the same title.<\/p>\n<p>A reader informed the paper late this month that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/06\/books\/review\/watching-over-her-jean-baptiste-andrea.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> its Jan. 6 review of \u201cWatching Over Her\u201d\u00a0by Jean-Baptiste Andrea<\/a>, written by author and journalist Alex Preston, bore similarities to an August review of the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2025\/aug\/21\/watching-over-her-by-jean-baptiste-andrea-review-a-love-song-to-italy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published in the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Times then launched a review and spoke to Preston, who admitted he used an AI tool to help draft the piece and that he failed to catch the Guardian material before the paper published the review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEditors have appended a note to a book review written earlier this year by a freelance critic, who told The Times after publication that he had used an A.I. tool to assist him in producing the piece,\u201d\u00a0a Times spokesperson said. \u201cThis tool produced similarities to a book review published in The Guardian, which our editors\u2019 note makes clear. For staff journalists and freelance writers alike, reliance on A.I. and inclusion of unattributed work by another writer is a serious violation of The Times\u2019s integrity and fundamental journalistic standards.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Preston told the Times he had not used AI to help draft any of his other stories. The paper notified the Guardian about the similarities and, on Monday, added an editors\u2019\u00a0note to the review that noted the use of AI and linked to the Guardian review.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson added that Preston, who has written six reviews between 2021 and 2026, would no longer write for the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"the-wrap-read-more__image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/new-york-times-union-contract-negotiations-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/NYT.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"A view of the New York Times building on 8th Avenue during a snow storm on February 8, 2025 in New York City. (Credit: Craig T Fruchtman\/Getty Images)\"   data-portal-copyright=\"TheWrap\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Preston told TheWrap in an email he used an \u201cA.I. editing tool improperly on a draft I had written\u201d\u00a0and that he failed to catch \u201coverlapping language\u201d\u00a0from the Guardian review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took responsibility immediately and apologized to The New York Times,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u201cBeyond that, I have nothing more to add.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times has been vocal about maintaining transparency and journalistic ethics as it experiments with generative AI, mandating work using the technology be \u201cvetted by our journalists\u201d and \u201creviewed by editors.\u201d Articles should also explain to readers how AI was used and the process taken to \u201cmitigate risks, such as bias or inaccuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first principles of journalism should apply just as forcefully when machines are involved,\u201d\u00a0it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/press\/principles-for-using-generative-a%E2%80%A4i%E2%80%A4-in-the-timess-newsroom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in its public principles. <\/p>\n<p>Preston is a six-time author whose most recent book, \u201cA Stranger in Corfu,\u201d was published last month by Pegasus Books and distributed by Simon &amp; Schuster. He has also published pieces in outlets including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/3192645c-9bc1-400d-bd46-0fe9982eeac7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Financial Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/culture\/2022\/03\/17\/a-swashbuckling-smugglers-tale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Economist<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/alex-preston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian<\/a>.
